After a tumultuous summer Daniel Alfredsson was finally back to doing what he does best -- playing hockey. Alfredsson made his Red Wings debut Friday at Joe Louis Arena -- wearing No. 11 ... so long Dan Cleary. Alfredsson took part in an informal practice session with several teammates including captain Henrik Zetterberg. “It felt good to finally come here and skate” Alfredsson said. “It’s been a few months since I signed and the only thing that has happened is moving the family. “We arrived yesterday and coming here skating with the guys almost makes it feel that it’s real now. “I’m excited to be here and I’m really looking forward to this challenge and what I can do for the team. Hopefully I can have a good year.” Last week Alfredsson and his family were in Detroit looking at houses. His family spent time with Johan Franzen’s family and Alfredsson came down to the arena to visit with staff and meet with Wings GM Ken Holland. “I feel I’m getting use to the surroundings a lit

Detroit Red Wings: Finding space for Thomas Tatar

The hockey preseason is about two weeks away. If you didn’t realize that I understand, football season is here. I get it. But for those that did, don’t get too excited it’s still only the preseason, #IsItOctoberYet. Important season ahead for Thomas Tatar. (Photo Credit: Cory Morse / Mlive.com) It’s fair to say we have already been introduced to a majority of the young faces...

Red Wings overnight report: for better or Samuelsson

As September begins and the Red Wings prepare for the prospect tournament (which begins on Thursday in Traverse City) and their main training camp (from Thursday, September 12th to Tuesday, September 17th), there's a fly in the ointment in terms of the Wings' status as over the cap by about $638,000 (per Capgeek) and over the 23-man roster limit by 2 players. If the Wings...

Pavel Datsyuk vs. Pavel Datsyuk in Red Wings’ Top Plays final, just like TSN’s POY

This seems to be a familiar result given Pavel Datsyuk's win over Pavel Datsyuk for TSN's Play of the Year title... Well our @Flagstar Top Plays Showdown Finals is Datsyuk and...Datsyuk. Vote now for which magical play was the best! http://t.co/V9RFAp1r2a — Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) September 2, 2013 Which Datsyuk goals made the cut? Let's...

Red Wings Sunday gnus: more Howard stuff, international/rookie news and another ‘Detoilet’ comment

I shook off my "sleeper" antidepressant to watch Manchester United tangle with Liverpool this morning (think the Wings, circa 2003, versus Boston, circa 2010),so I figured that I may as well put some work in, and here are the results thereof. MLive's Brendan Savage penned an article about Jimmy Howard which ties nicely into the Free Press's Helene St. James'...

Red Wings mid-day quickies: Ferraro’s journey, Athanasiou’s slick move and Franzen’s ‘numbers’

Today's Red Wings-related stories mostly involve "tidbits," but I did find something of a tale of two prospects who are taking part in the Red Wings' main camp and prospect tournament, respectively, on what is a bit of a "slow day." Grand Rapids Griffins forward Landon Ferraro is making a 2,260-mile trip from Vancouver, British Columbia to Grand Rapids...

Red Wings overnight report: on packin’ up, Quincey, Filppula, Alfredsson and charitable Whalers

The Red Wings were a little busy at Joe Louis Arena on Friday, and I'm not talking about the players who took part in Friday's informal practice (Daniel Alfredsson included): What does it take to get the Wings to Traverse City for Camp? A lot of people, a lot of hours & a truckload of gear. pic.twitter.com/uxIbqqKMKt — Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings...

But for those that did, don’t get too excited it’s still only the preseason, #IsItOctoberYet. Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard preparing for what could be especially memorable season

Jimmy Howard and the Detroit Red Wing are in store for a season that will be busier than usual. Especially in the next six months. "We've got a lot going on don't we?" the Red Wings veteran goaltender said. "Winter Classic. A lot of guys here are trying for Olympic spots. 'HBO 24-7.' It's going to be pretty hectic around here." Yes it is...

Red Wings overnight report: on Howard’s Olympic hopes, stolen jerseys and oversimplification

Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard's new mask mostly pays tribute to the City of Detroit, but WXYZ's Brad Galli duly noted that its backplate's American flag-themed background wouldn't be out of place atop a Team USA jersey. The Free Press's Helene St. James spoke with Howard about his uphill battle in terms of out-dueling Jonathan Quick, Ryan Miller, Craig Anderson...

Does This Make Any Sense?

Someone please tell me why Detroit's bankruptcy was brought up in this statement? from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe, The Red Wings on Friday tweeted the first pictures of newcomer Daniel Alfredsson on the ice, wearing his bright red Winged Wheel sweater. Painful for most onlookers from Ottawa, and a few here in the Hub of Hockey. The Bruins made an aggressive...

MacLean: Senators in no rush to name new captain

Daniel Alfredsson was captain of the Ottawa Senators for 13 seasons. Coach Paul MacLean is in no rush to name his replacement. MacLean said Friday there's no timetable to name a new Senators captain after Alfredsson left the team to sign as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings. "We're going to go through a process" MacLean said according to the Senators'...

Red Wings overnight report: on the tourney to come, some repetition and fantasy hockey gnus

Today marks the start of a very, very busy sixteen-day stretch for me, and while tomorrow's 230-mile drive's always an adventure, as the mom likes to say, "Packing is purgatory" (can you tell that my anxiety disorder's doing somersaults?). The Red Wings' players will skate at Joe Louis Arena as informal practices slowly but surely increase in both intensity...

Previewing The Detroit Red Wings

Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington has been doing an Eastern Conference preview over the summe.  Today he takes a look at the Wings. Our take: The Red Wings will trade in their bitter rivalries with the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues for new ones with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens. And that’s a good thing. The Red Wings barely got...
