Anaheim Ducks’ Ryan Strome fined $5K for cross-checking Seattle Kraken’s Tye Kartye

An experienced player’s wallet is a little lighter today due to recent actions.

On Friday, the National Hockey League Department of Player Safety announced that Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Strome has been fined $5,000 for cross-checking Seattle Kraken forward Tye Kartye.

The amount is the maximum allowable under the current collective bargaining agreement.

The incident occurred early in the third period of the matchup between the Ducks and the Kraken on Thursday night. After a whistle, Kartye looked to have been approaching Strome, to which Strome responded by throwing a cross-check up high on Kartye.

Strome was given a two-minute minor for cross-checking on the play, while Kartye was given two minutes for roughing.

This is the first time in the 12-year NHL career that Strome has faced any form of supplemental discipline. The 30-year-old is in the midst of his second season in Anaheim since he signed with the team as a free agent in July 2022. Through 70 games, Strome has scored 11 goals and 36 points, a little off the pace he was on during his time with the New York Rangers, where he set a career-high with 59 points during the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season.

Strome is in the second year of a five-year deal with the Ducks, which will see the former Edmonton Oiler get $5 million a season through the end of the 2026-27 campaign. In 773 career games, Strome has scored 156 goals and 278 assists, including 19 points in 37 playoff games with both the New York Islanders and Rangers.

The Ducks (24-45-4) are hanging around the bottom of the Western Conference standings. They are currently seventh in the Pacific Division, 12 points ahead of the San Jose Sharks for the worst record in the NHL.
