The New York Rangers have been looking for the right combination to go with Marian Gaborik for some time trying out countless groupings, but an injury to Wojtek Wolski might have finally allowed them to hit on the right one.  Both Artem Anisimov and Derek Stepan have struggled at times early in the season to repeat the work they did for New York last year finding themselves on the fourth line for periods of time.  Stepan was put back with Gaborik a few games back, but Anisimov got his first shot with him, this year, last night against Montreal.

While the two young forwards did not connect with Gaborik in the game last night both showed tremendous vision and passing that should make their combination with the Rangers' sniper a potentially lethal one. Stepan showed off his passing acumen with his top quality feeds to Erik Christensen and Michael Del Zotto for their goals and Anisimov showed his vision finding Dan Girardi for the Rangers other goal of the first period.  Having players who can skate, see the ice and have the passing ability of Stepan and Anisimov is great for Gaborik as he can carry the puck less through the neutral zone and when he works his way open they will find him.  The willingness of both Stepan and Anisimov to work in the corners and on the forechecking cycle allows Gaborik to work free more in the slot areas as well.  The key for the two young players will be to continue to play their game and take the opportunity that is there without trying to force chances with Gaborik.

Gaborik has been playing at a tremendously high level all season despite the constant changing of his linemates, but if the Rangers can have these two young, highly-skilled forwards seize the opportunity with their top sniper, Gaborik could take it to yet another level.  Beyond that it would bring a level of stability to the Rangers offensive lines as Richards has found a home with Dubinsky and Callahan and the Boyle line remains in tact.

Derek Stepan Looking at a Breakout Year

When a rookie enters the National Hockey League and scores 21 goals and 45 points in his first professional season, you would normally consider that to be his "breakout" year. Those were the  credentials of 21-year-old Derek Stepan in 2010-11, and although he put up such incredible numbers as a freshman, I don't classify it as his breakout period. He may have surpassed...

… Stepan had a monster game and totally deserved to wear The Broadway Hat. Although I have to say Biron rocks the hat better than Stepan. Not everyone can rock it the right way.

Rangers-Jets in review

Pretty good homestand afterall, eh? 4-1-1 sounds better than 4-2, which is really what it was, right? I mean, if the breakaway contest win is a win, the breakaway contest loss should be a loss. But, you know, this is the NHL. No matter how you slice it, that’s nine points out of 12 on the ‘stand, and 17 of 26 points for the season. Thoughts: 1) Derek Stepan. I know not...

A Look at the Rangers with WFAN Rangers’ Blogger Brian Monzo

With the New York Rangers just past the 10-game mark this season, I figured now would be a good time to check in with our friend Brian Monzo, the Rangers’ blogger and podcaster for WFAN.com. Monzo was kind enough to give us his thoughts on this year’s team as well as who has been playing well, who has been a disappointment, and more. PH: What are some of your general thoughts...

A huge Step as Rangers Derek turns on the Jets

John Tortorella moved Derek Stepan onto the Rangers’ first power play unit Saturday to better utilize his playmaking ability. Stepan responded on both the man advantage and even strength, notching a goal and an assist, as the Blueshirts won their fourth straight at the Garden, 3-0, over the Winnipeg Jets..

The Rangers Are Awfully Hot Right Now

A week ago, the Rangers were in panic mode and summoning Sean Avery from Hartford in an attempt to inject some life in a team that showed very little of it through the first nine games of the season. Mission accomplished, although it is hard to say just what Avery has done to turn the team's fortunes around. He has played sparingly in two games, but the Rangers have won four...
