The Washington Capitals beat the flightless fat birds 3-1 in the Winter Classic.
I only know this because I read it this morning; I didn’t see the game last night.
Wait, what? You mean I, a passionate hockey fan, did not see the preeminent game of the season, second only to the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

Yeah, I didn’t see it. I’m pretty tired of having Cindy shoved down my throat everywhere I go. In fact, if it were any other team playing besides the flightless fat birds, I would have watched it. But what they did in Pittsburgh, having cookie monster take a run at Keith Yandle:
And then the Game Ops people in Pittsburgh showing the slow-motion replay of the knock out punch delivered by Deryk Engelland on Taylor Pyatt over and over (flightless fat bird fans went berserk about how cool and awesome that punch was)

Why should I support an organization by watching them on television? I don’t care about them and I really don’t care about the Capitals. I used to watch them when I lived in the Southeast and I still don’t care about them.
And I shouldn’t have to. I’m already a hockey fan. The Winter Classic is not primarily aimed at me.
I don’t deny that the Winter Classic is important PR machine for the NHL. The event draws the fans who may want to watch sports, and catch a hockey game outdoors. It draws a monster rating every year and it’s good for the sport.
It’s not my responsibility though to implore all of my non-hockey watching friends to view the game. If I want them to get into the sport, I take them down to Jobing.com arena to see a game live. If they dig it, great. If not, I tried.
But I won’t go out of my way to proselytize the religion of hockey. That’s not my job. You might read elsewhere on this blog where I thought so, but I soon realized how exhausting that was.
People will get hockey or they won’t.
If the flightless fat birds had more class (I do remember seeing the lean years over there Before the Coming of Crosby – had a hard time filling the building then, eh?), or played a cleaner game, or didn’t show the slo-mo of Pyatt going down over and over, I might have cared more. But I don’t.
There’s a game on today at 4:00pm local that I care about more. With players that have more class than them.
