Playing GMMG For A Day

While Vancouver Canucks fans patiently wait out a trade for goalie Roberto Luongo, I thought it would be fun to play the I’m Mike Gillis game again.

This time instead of eating as many lobster stuffed tacos as I can and drinking enough red wine to fill a bath tub, I’m going to focus on a trade. The focus of that trade is Bobby Ryan.

I’ll be honest, I’m pretty surprised not a lot has been made out of Ryan’s comments last month regarding the trade rumors surrounding him; it’s kind of been quietly swept away.

Randy Miller (@RandyJMiller) of the Courier-Post, wrote a piece on Ryan and his frustration with recent trade rumors in late June.

Ryan went on to say:

“I take things personally, Anaheim to me has been a team over the past year that really has shown me nothing to prove that they want me here, unfortunately. Obviously, it’s not the ideal situation. When you get drafted, you want to win championships with that team and every time they look to add a piece to the puzzle, I’m the piece going the other way.”

Obviously frustrated, Ryan continued by saying “I gotta be honest with you. At this point, I don’t care. Move me … because it’s just tough going to the rink every day knowing that if something goes wrong, you’re going to be the guy moved.”

No problems with teammates or coaching

Ryan also went on to talk about his appreciation for team mates Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, also mentioning how he enjoyed playing for Bruce Boudreau, who he said really helped get him out of a funk and got his second half back on track. Which understandably makes the situation he’s in right now more frustrating.

“I gotta be honest with you. At this point, I don’t care. Move me … “

The reason that Bobby Ryan is of particular interest to me is not only because he’s a goal scorer, I mean, four straight 30+ goal seasons can attest to that, but he’s big, he has great puck skill and he could be that big right handed winger for the twins.

Or if you don’t want to disrupt the twins and Alex Burrows then why not play him with Kesler and Booth?

Ryan, noted for his goal scoring might help spark Ryan Kesler, who I’m sure wouldn’t mind playing with another one of his countrymen.

The part that I like about this trade speculation is that Bobby Ryan doesn’t have a no trade or no movement clause in his current contract. Meaning, the Ducks can trade him to anyone of the other 29 teams in the league.

It all comes down to which team offers the best return for Ryan.

I’m going to go out on a limb with this one, the package I would offer the Ducks in return for Bobby Ryan would look like this:

To Vancouver:

Bobby Ryan, Kyle Palmieri and a Mid to late round pick

To Anaheim:

Jordan Schroeder, and Alexander Edler

A conditional first round pick. The conditions being that if Alex Edler doesn’t resign with the Ducks, they are compensated with a 1st round pick. If he does re-sign, then they’re given a 2ndround selection.

Yes, Keith Ballard, I’m talking to you.

And of course the key to any trade that involves Vancouver, the glorious 3rd round pick.

Time for a bold move?

The last time the Canucks made a bold move that included a young player and a first round draft pick they sort of took the short end of it.

Yes, Keith Ballard, I’m talking to you.

This time around, I think that this type of bold move could really pay off. I know losing Edler would hurt the team because of how young and talented he is, but this trade gives the Ducks two things they need – a center and a defenseman.

In return, the Canucks acquire Bobby Ryan and Kyle Palmieri, who was drafted 26th overall in 2009. A right winger, Palmieri is projected to have some scoring ability.

Worst case scenario he’s a bottom six guy with scoring touch and an excellent stride.

The Ducks get a top four pairing defenseman and a center to play under Getzlaf. It might be a lot to give up, but it’s also a great deal to take back a player of Ryan’s caliber.

He can fit in with Henrik Sedin & Daniel Sedin or play along side Kesler. It gives the second power play unit some much needed scoring as well.

That’s it for me. I’ll be ready for all of your hate mail, letter bombs and “what a douchebag” comments.

Hopefully you enjoyed me playing “I’m Mike Gillis” as much as I did.
