Any day now… While I wish I were writing about the end of the lockout, I’m not. The NHL and the NHLPA are too busy going back and forth on what’s fair and not fair. In fact it was just announced that all NHL games through November 1st have been cancelled. Don’t sweat it too much, though, after all if there is going to be a full 82 game season, it would start November 2nd. This seems like a move made by the NHL to flex their muscle. Like an annoying cousin, the Luongo to Toronto rumors are back! Even with the lack of a CBA the Roberto Luongo trade rumors have come back. Nothing new, I suppose, Toronto has constantly been a team rumored to land the services of the all-star net minder from the Canucks. John Shannon of Sportsnet broke the news that the Canucks and the Leafs had come to an agreement on a trade involving Roberto Luongo and that it would be announced once the lockout had ended. Obviously, without a CBA the teams cannot exchange a player, or players who technically aren’t playing for them right now, or something like that, but you get the idea. Yesterday Mike Gillis spoke with the Team 1040 (Photo – VancouverObserver.com) It’s speculated that the Maple Leafs were close to a deal with the Canucks at the draft, but nothing ended up materializing. The Canucks had supposedly asked for quite a few of the Leafs young prospects and a pick in exchange for Luongo. The Leafs had offered the Canucks former first rounder and now Philadelphia Flyer Luke Schenn for Luongo. Yesterday Mike Gillis spoke with the Team 1040 and while he denied the report, he didn’t do in his usual way, leaving more room to speculate. When asked whether the two teams were close to making a deal, Gillis responded by saying: “The definition of close is different for everybody” That doesn’t sound like a denial to me. It sounds more like they’re waiting to see what happens once this pesky little lockout ends. Gillis also echoed what he’s been preaching all along since rumors of Luongo being traded surfaced at the end of the season. “We’ve moved very slowly on any discussions with Roberto –- we’ll trade him when we get want we want to get for him, or we won’t trade him, and either way it’s fine with me.” But is there room for $9.3 million in the crease? Cory Schneider is ready to start, there’s no doubt about it, and while he’s been a good sport coming through the Canucks system all these years, everyone knows that this is his time and that he’ll be given the reigns. It’s nice to see that Gillis is sticking to his guns on the idea of starting the year with both goalies, and maybe with a compressed schedule it would benefit the Canucks to have both goalies. But at the end of the day, he’s going to do what’s best for the team, maybe having that much cap space allocated to two goalies isn’t what’s best for the team, and while he may not get the three young players and a pick he looked for in the draft, if a deal with Toronto is imminent, it would certainly appear that the Canucks have lowered their asking price.
