Until a few days ago, the Oilers were guaranteed, statistically, of selecting in the top three of this summer's NHL draft. Now, one decent road trip later, they have shot out of the basement like a teenager whose parents have arrived home from the grocery store. In doing so, they have moved into a tie with Montreal and within range of six other underachieving teams. Should the Oilers continue their hot streak through their final six games, they could finish as high as 22nd overall, good enough for the 8th pick in the draft and well outside the lottery.Is this team so poorly run that they could scuttle the entire last three seasons, then suddenly “take some pride”, as Coach Tom Renney suggested during a tirade last week, in the last few games of the season?
