The Philadelphia Flyers are among a select few of teams that have trouble setting their offensive lines because of too much talent. The Flyers last season struggled on the defensive line, so in the offseason Paul Holmgren decided to stack the offense some more, with the philosophy of score more times than you get scored on. However, this may work very very very very very well for the Flyers.
The addition of Vincent Lecavalier was the Flyers huge splash in the summer. He played 14 years for the Tampa Bay Lightning tallying 383 goals and 491 assists in 1037 games. As the long standing captain departs Tampa and joins the Broad Street Bullies, this two way center is a perfect addition to a stacked offensive core. Yet, adding Lecavalier causes a lot of problems for the players trying to make the team. Without Vincent the center situation was almost complete anyway... line one is Giroux, line two is Couturier, line three and four would be either Talbot or Laughton. Now with the addition of Vincent, Laughton might not make the team this year.
Scott Laughton, 19, played his five game maximum last season, (Flyers would have had to pay him for a whole year contract if he played more), he didn't tally any points for the Flyers last season but for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL, he put up solid numbers (21 goals 32 assists). The problem he will be facing for this year is the final emergence of Nick Cousins, who the Flyers have been waiting for him to get his act together and focus on 100% hockey. Last year the 20-year old was 3rd in the OHL in points. He had 103 points in 64 games which is an insane number for a youngster. Although Ian Laperriere (Flyers development scout and playoff hero) thinks that Cousins will start his career in the AHL (American Hockey League), he does have a hunch that Cousins might make the final roster.
As of right now I'm adding my prediction for the final 23 man roster.
