DENVER - MAY 4: Peter Forsberg #21 of the Colorado Avalanche looks on as he skates to shake hands with the San Jose Sharks after losing game six of the Western Conference Semifinals during the 2004 NHL Stanley Cup playoffs May 4, 2004 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. If there is a lockout or strike, which is expected, Forsberg may leave the NHL behind and return to play in Sweden. The Colorado Avalanche retired Peter Forsberg's No. 21 jersey prior to Saturday's season opener against the Detroit Red Wings.

Forsberg's number is the fourth retired by the Avalanche, joining Patrick Roy's No. 33, Joe Sakic's No. 19 and Ray Bourque's No. 77.

The two-time Stanley Cup champion made his way into the arena by walking through the stands, resulting in a thunderous ovation by those at the Pepsi Center.

In February, Forsberg retired after a comeback attempt that lasted just two games. He had been out of the NHL since 2008 due to a chronic foot injury.

Before the injury, Forsberg was one of the top players of his era. He was the NHL MVP in 2003 and played most of his career with the Avalanche franchise, collecting 249 goals and 636 assists in 708 games.

Forsberg also played for Philadelphia and Nashville from 2005-07. In April, he returned to his native Sweden to become an assistant general manager for Modo of the Swedish Elite League.
