Denver, CO. The Colorado Avalanche have sent a clear message to Matt Duchene with the naming of Gabriel Landeskog to be the teams captain. At only 19 years old, Landeskog becomes the youngest captain in NHL history, just a bit younger than Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Milan Hejduk will continue as a leader assuming the assistant captains role, as this may be his last season probably retiring at the end of the year. Matt Duchene may have been the likely choice for captain with Milan Hejduk relinquishing his captaincy. Coach Joe Sacco has struggled with the talented Duchene and may have been sending a message that they don’t have faith in his ability to lead this team for the 2012-2013 season. Riddled with injuries, Matt has struggled to get his game to the potential he has and Landeskog was the rookie of the year award recipient in 2012. Gabriel led the Avalanche in games, plus/minus, shots, hits and goals last season, making him an excellent choice for team captain. Landeskog will have to keep the gloves on more often this season as he must keep a cool head to “discuss” calls with the referees. This season may be the last for Duchene with the Avalanche. With the emergence of Landeskog and the superb play of Paul Stasny, Duchene may be trade bait during the season. Even if he picks up his play, he will be an even greater trade option for the Avalanche as they look to try and make the playoffs this year. Denver Sports Chat – Kris Loco
