Erik Johnson played like he had a score to settle with the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night. The young Avalanche defenseman was chippy but did not commit a penalty, and his mean streak was pure benefit to his team.

Aaron Musick: The evoloution of Erik Johnson

This has been an article I've been writing for a while but because of the Denver Post's article by Mike Chambers, it felt like the right time. When the Avalanche added a player like Erik Johnson to their roster late last year, there were some serious questions that had to be answered. Was he a first round bust? Can he find his game again? Will he stop being so soft...

NHL: Avalanche Warning - 2/13/12

The Colorado Avalanche have earned five points in their last three games and are certainly trending in the right direction after a tough divisional stretch.  The conclusion of the four-game homestand proved fruitful for Colorado as they defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 last Tuesday and the Carolina Hurricanes in a thrilling 4-3 overtime win in which Ryan O'Reilly was...

Aaron Musick: Where will Duchene fit?

Good news everybody, Matt Duchene is back at Colorado Avalanche practice. He's wearing an orange no-contact jersey, making him look like a traffic cone but Duchene is back, skating hard and looking like he is nearing return. Now that he is close to return, the question is where to put him in the lineup. When he went down with a knee injury, he was playing on a line Paul...

Hejduk scheduled to tie Foote in franchise games played

ST. LOUIS — No skate today for the Avalanche, which flew here immediately after last night’s 4-3 overtime victory over Carolina in Denver. No updates, really, other than the same guys who participated in last night’s warmups — including scratched defenseman Ryan Wilson — also just skated in warmups at Scottrade Center. Assuming veteran winger Milan Hejduk plays, he will...

Duchene still in orange “no crush” today

Avalanche center Matt Duchene is again practicing with the team today at its Centennial complex, but Duchene is still donning an orange jersey so he won’t be available to the media. We will talk to Avs coach Joe Sacco after practice about the prospects of Duchene playing in the upcoming three-game Canadian road trip that begins Wednesday at Vancouver. That story will be in the...

Avs' Hejduk needs 411 games to catch Sakic

The only three captains in Avalanche history are now the only three players to have played at least 967 regular-season games for the Colorado-Quebec franchise. Current captain Milan Hejduk reached 967 games Saturday night, tying the retired Adam Foote.

Duchene back to practice

Matt Duchene at practice today, though he wore the pumpkin jersey for non-contact. He looked much quicker on his skates than when I saw him a few days ago, skating on his own. We’ll get an update on him after practice, but the signs are looking strong he’ll be back real soon. Here’s some video of him from the practice:

Quiet Sunday for Avalanche

No practice today for the Avs, who resume practice Monday and next play at Vancouver on Wednesday. Adrian Dater will be on that three-game, western-Canadian trip. Look for a story in Monday’s paper about young defenseman Erik Johnson, who had one of his best games as an Av against St. Louis, his former team, on Saturday night. The story speaks to required skills that EJ actually...

Avalanche-Canucks Preview

Shootouts have been very kind to the Colorado Avalanche all season, except earlier this month when they hosted Vancouver. The Canucks are getting plenty of practice in tiebreakers, but they hope they won't need one Wednesday night as they look to take at least one point from the Avalanche for the 15th consecutive meeting. Colorado (28-25-4) had won all seven of its shootouts...

Avalanche support this week’s pond hockey tournament in Silverthorn

While the Avalanche and DU are on the road this weekend, an entertainment alternative is to watch or play in the Pabst Colorado Pond Hockey Tournament in Silverthorn. The Avs and a handful of other big-name hockey organizations are behind this thing — dubbed one of the best pond hockey events in the west. For information, including celebrities who are participating and lodging...

Avs' Matt Duchene returns to practice, will make roadtrip

Matt Duchene returned to practice with the Avalanche today, albeit in an orange non-contact jersey.

Practice Report: February 13

Sporting an orange (non-contact jersey) Matt Duchene skated with the team this morning for the first time since his knee injury on December 29. Duchene, who's been skating on his own for the last week, once again took the ice by himself prior t...
