The Chicago Blackhawks are making like the Blues Brothers and getting the band back together. (No word on whether the Hawks are operating by heavenly mandate, though). Winger Kris Versteeg, a member of the 2010 Stanley Cup winner than ended Chicago’s 49-year drought without the greatest chalice in sports, was reacquired by the Hawks in a trade with Florida that sends youngsters Jimmy Hayes and Dylan Olsen to the Panthers. Versteeg was a key cog in the 2010 playoff run, scoring 14 points in 22 games. His best series was the Western Conference semifinals against Vancouver, where he scored the game-winner in Game 2 and jump-started the Hawks with a second-period goal in Game 6. However, he is probably best remembered by Hawks fans for his extremely poor attempt at rapping during the team’s championship rally. (Then again, the only Canadian rappers are Drake and Snow, so it’s not as if he had anyone good to learn from). Unfortunately, like many of his teammates on that squad, Versteeg became a salary cap victim in the offseason, getting dealt to the Maple Leafs for Viktor Stalberg and two guys who never did anything. Less than half a season after the Hawks latest Cup success, Versteeg is back in the fold. I suspect the ovation for his home debut on Sunday will be rather loud.
