The Chicago Blackhawks gave us a perfect example of addition by subtraction this weekend, when defenseman Nick Boynton was claimed off of waivers by the Philadelphia Flyers.
Boynton had been placed on waivers by Chicago at the end of the week. He was a member of last year’s championship squad, after being acquired in a deadline deal with the Anaheim Ducks. He was on the ice for Patrick Kane‘s overtime goal in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals.
While Boynton’s numbers might look better than Niklas Hjalmarsson or Jordan Hendry, we know numbers don’t tell the whole story. Boynton’s tenure in Chicago was riddled with bad penalties and a penchant for looking lost on the ice...
