I know I'm prone to knee-jerk reactions, but isn't that in the job description of a hockey blogger? Well, it hurts me to say this, so I'm just going to take the "rip the band aid off" approach and say it. Mikko Koivu might not be as good as we think he is.Since the lockout it's been accepted fact in the State of Hockey that Koivu was the best player on the team and that he was significantly underrated by hockey wonks league-wide. For years I've spent countless blog entries praising the skills of our captain and wondering how freaking good he would be if he had talent around him. Koivu for Selke and whatnot. Looking back, I think I was slightly off base.Koivu is a very good checking center, period. He's a good team leader and works harder than any other teammate, but he's not an elite player in the NHL. If I were to rank the Top 20 centers today I'd have to leave #9 off of the list. He's not that skilled offensively and rarely makes his l...

Minnesota's top line misfiring too often

ST. PAUL, Minn. The offseason additions of Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi were supposed to reinvigorate a struggling Minnesota Wild offensive attack. Six games in, that hasn't been the case. With a 4-2 loss Tuesday to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Wild fell to 2-2-2 on the season. Despite its vaunted top line of Heatley, Setoguchi and team captain Mikko Koivu, Minnesota...

Wild looking for quick start in Edmonton

THURSDAY'S STORYLINE: A quick start. That is what the Wild are looking for tonight in Edmonton. The Wild came out lackadaisical in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Head coach Mike Yeo said he expects his team to come out ready tonight. "We talked about it, we addressed it. I am really expecting our group to respond with a great effort tonight. I am expecting...

Or more like this... One of my favorite video game series of all time was Capcom's Mega Man series. I can still remember spending hours of my childhood working my way through the levels, being both challenged by the difficulty and immensely frustrated that I'd get so far only to die by being a tad bit short on an fairly basic jump across a ravine. Each level would end...

Lundin itching to put on his skates

Every morning, as his Wild teammates hit the ice for practice, Mike Lundin steps out of the locker room dripping with sweat from an off-ice workout.

Brad Ratgen: Wild Come Up Empty on National T.V. Against the Penguins

The Minnesota Wild hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday evening. A Penguins team that did not feature Crosby, Malkin or Fleury. A team referred to by a Wild beat writer as their “B” team. A team that showed Minnesota fans what the rest of the Eastern Conference learned last year, that with or without their superstars, they were a team of depth and a team to be reckoned...

G6 Wild at Oilers

The Minnesota Wild are as focused as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men (book and film). Their focus? Mind numbingly dull hockey all over North America, every season. I thought the Wild would change their style after Jacques Lemaire decided to move on, but the soldiers didn't get the message and continue to play that strangle style of hockey.Honestly, Minnesota Wild are...

Wild-Oilers Preview

The Minnesota Wild are in need of something to get them out of a minor rough patch. A trip to Edmonton might be what it takes. Facing each other for the second time in eight days, the Wild look to avoid a third straight loss while trying for an eighth consecutive victory over the Oilers on Thursday night. Minnesota (2-2-2) has scored two goals in each of its last three games, losing...
