Columbus Blue Jackets right wing Jared Boll broke his right thumb after landing a punch on Bryan Allen of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Boll connected with a right, but was seen shaking the hand after skating to the penalty box during their preseason game in Raleigh, N.C.
The team did not divulge exactly how much time will be missed by Boll, who went to the dressing room and did not return to the contest.
The 25-year-old North Carolina native collected seven goals, five assists and 182 penalty minutes in 73 games last season.
