The Columbus Marathon was run through the streets of the Ohio capital on Sunday. The Vancouver Canucks are only a little more than halfway through a marathon of their own -- it’s seven games not 26.2 miles -- and on Sunday night they hit the wall. After two wins and a shootout loss in their first three games the Canucks dropped a 3-1 decision to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. Winger R.J. Umberger sent in alone with a slick pass from Port Moody’s Ryan Johansen put a shot through the legs of Vancouver goalie Eddie Lack for the game-winner at 11:14 of the third period. Johansen added an empty-netter with 27 seconds remaining. The Canucks started this game strongly but seemed to fade down the stretch in what was their fourth game in six nights. The loss dropped Vancouver’s record to 5-4-1. The Blue Jackets snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 3-5-0. The game was a battle of the backups. Lack made just his second NHL start for the Canucks while Curtis McElhinney got his first start of the season and his first NHL action of any kind since December of 2011. Lack faced just two shots in the first period. Unfortunately the first one went in. Marion Gaborik tipped a point shot by Artem Anisimov past Lack at the 3:27 mark. The Canucks outshot the Blue Jackets 13-2 but didn’t really have any blue-chip chances on McElhinney. Vancouver tied the game at 10:42 of the second with as rare power-play goal. It wasn’t especially pretty as Jason Garrison and Henrik Sedin both jammed away at the puck in McElhinney’s pads after Ryan Kesler had put the puck on net with a slick backhand between his legs.
