The Blues are not expected to make a big splash within the free agent signing world. But the team did take care of some business today by signing restricted free agents Alexander Steen and Vladimir Sobotka. Steen was a must to re-sign and inking him in for 4 years is a good move by the team. He’s a versatile forward who can play center or left wing. The 26 year old was used by Davis Payne in all areas last season–the power play, the penalty kill, a checking line, scoring line, and at other crucial moments in the game. Steen had his best season of his 5 year career. He tied for the team lead in goals with 24, was a plus 6, blocked 39 shots and added 2 shorthanded goals along with 4 game-winning goals. He will be expected to provide offense as the team seemingly continues to be short on scoring. Expectations shouldn’t be too high though for him to score consistently.
