The St. Louis Blues are having plenty of fun with their new postgame tradition. And the puns are as bad as one might think.
Similar to some teams' Hard Hat winner', the Blues have begun handing out their own award following wins: the Weenie of the game.
The prize for the toughest and most deserving player is a large hot-dog weenie hat that the winner must wear in front of his teammates or the media.
And everyone is playing along.
"He really had some mustard on that one, didn't he?" forward David Perron said of a goal scored by Saturday's winner, David Backes.
"I'm going to relish this one," Backes later said.
The idea for the award came from forward Matt D'Agostini. The hat was ordered online and the first Weenie of the game' was presented about two weeks ago.
Saturday's 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres' marked the hat's first public appearance when Backes wore it during postgame interviews.
"It's a little bit of an inside job for our locker room, some of the heart and sole guys came up with it," Backes said. "Instead of a hard hat, we get the weenie on our head."
The winner from the previous game chooses the next game's winner. The award is given to the toughest player or player that most impacted the win, such as for a game-winning goal.
Goalie Jaroslav Halak won the award for posting a shutout in a 1-0 win over the Dallas Stars on Jan. 16.
"It's something new for us and it's fun after a game to pass it to someone else," Halak said.
Asked why he didn't wear the weenie hat for postgame interviews, Halak laughed.
"I mean it's beautiful, but come on," Halak said. "I'm better than that."
The Blues enter Monday's game in Detroit in 4th place in the Western Conference but just a point behind the Red Wings for the top spot in both the Conference and Central Division.

Not quite ready to take Wings
The Blues appear to be on the verge of consistently competing with the NHL's big boys, but as they showed in Monday's 3-1 loss to Detroit, they're not quite there yet.
With a chance to jump over Detroit into No. 1 in the NHL standings, the Blues failed to withstand a Red Wings charge for the third straight time the teams have met in the last month.

we are like kind of legit
You know, we always forget about the Blues. We don't know why. They've been around awhile. It probably has something to do with the fact that Missouri is just a ******* unlikely place for a hockey team. We'll say even more unlikely than Phoenix or Atlanta or SUNRISE, FLORIDA, or Tampa Bay. It just seems so antithetical to hockey and to pro sports and we don't even...
Here Come The Blues
from Mark Spector of Sportsnet, This is the story of a hockey team so hot, that if it resided in Canada we would know its roster from lines one through four, and three pairings deep.
Instead however, the St. Louis Blues reside in anonymity in the Midwest, quietly rolling along in an arena that’s on its third name, under ownership that has been trying to sell off part of the team...

Should Ken Hitchcock win the Jack Adams Award?
The St. Louis Blues have ascended to the top of both the Western Conference and NHL rankings, a feat more remarkable considering their struggles at the beginning of the season and during the prior two disappointing seasons. While the Blues possess a solid mix of gritty veterans and young players, their success has directly been related to a sole personnel move: the hiring of...

There are two things I hate in this world. Blackhawks "fans" and Blues "fans" both for the simple fact that they know absolutely nothing about the sport they claim to be real fans of. Yet they spew unintelligible nonsense about the team and city I love.Puck drops at 7:30pm on NBCSN. Eddie...
