Philadelphia Flyers Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. Photo: TalkSportsPhilly.com It’s pretty easy to dogpile on Ilya Bryzgalov right now. After being brought to the Flyers to solve their goaltending riddle, the quirky Russian has done a solid job of underwhelming Flyers fans. In the meantime, backup Sergei Bobrovsky has played amazing hockey, and has many people questioning whether management made the right decision this past offseason by commiting a ludicrous amount of years to Ilya Bryzgalov. Peter Laviolette, the Flyers coach who doesn’t like labels or numbers when it comes to his goalies, gave Bryzgalov a bit of a vote of confidence this morning. “I don’t use numbers, you know that. Bryz has gotten a majority of the starts. Bryz was brought here to be a horse, and he’s received a majority of the games. I don’t see that changing.” -Flyers’ coach Peter Laviolette It may not be a ringing endorsement of Bryzgalov, but it does say something. ...

Play Bryzgalov & Who Want Tuomo Ruutu

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal, • I know the Philadelphia Flyers aren’t thrilled with Ilya Bryzgalov — they think he talks too much, and his stats are certainly far from $10 million a year worthy (3.07 goals-against average, .891 save percentage) — but did they not do their due diligence. Bryzgalov is off-the-wall; he’s a character. He is who...

A Brief E-mail Interview with Ian Laperriere

With all the concussions that are happening in the National Hockey League this year, I figured now would be a good time to do an e-mail interview with an NHLer who has had one and that is Ian Lapperriere. Lapperriere has not played in the NHL since the 2009-10 season due to post-concussion syndrome. Ian was kind enough to take the time to tell us about how he got into hockey, how...

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: 1/16/12

There is no doubt that Claude Giroux and Jaromir Jagr have been struggling of late, but there is no reason to be overly concerned about either player. It's just a midseason slump. In particular, I don't think Giroux is still suffering any ill-effects from his concussion in December. Be's simply not playing very well lately and has been pressing the last few games....

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: 1/15/12

The Philadelphia Flyers recovered their work ethic in last night's 4-2 loss in Nashville, but the team more deserving of victory was clearly the Predators. Philly worked hard but the Preds worked just a little harder and quite a bit smarter. The Flyers were forced to chase the game for much of the night against a team that entered the game with the NHL's sixth-best record...

The Afternoon After Round-Up: Predators 4, Flyers 2

Saturday night's Predators 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers was one of the more solid team efforts in a while and it came against a top team from the Eastern Conference. The Predators did a great job of causing havoc for the Flyers in the neutral zone and never allowed them to play their game. On the offensive side, the Preds scored enough to win but wasted a ton of scoring...
