During the late 1990's and early 2000's, offensive players feared skating into the Bruins half of the ice when Kyle McLaren was back on defense, ready to take some shots. McLaren was drafted by Boston in the first-round (ninth overall) in the 1995 NHL Draft. He played his first full season of professional hockey at the young age of 18.

One of McLaren's most memorable moments with the B's came in the 2002 NHL playoffs. In the first round against the Montreal Canadiens, McLaren demolished Richard Zednik with an elbow to the face. Zednik suffered a fractured cheekbone, broken nose, and a concussion as a result of the hit and forced Zednik to miss the remainder of the playoffs. McLaren received a three-game suspension from the league.

In the early 2000's, McLaren got into a dispute with the Bruins' management. They offered McLaren a two-way contract, meaning that McLaren could be made to report to the minor league affiliate of the Bruins, the Providence Bruins, where he would earn but a small fraction of his NHL salary. McLaren was insulted by the contract and demanded a trade. McLaren was traded to the San Jose Sharks for Jeff Jillson and Jeff Hackett after the 2001-02 season.

McLaren was waived by the Sharks in 2008 and is currently a free agent. Here is that hit on Zednik I mentioned earlier:
