Boston Bruins sign Drew Bavaro to one-year, entry-level contract

Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney announced Tuesday that the club has signed defenseman Drew Bavaro to a one-year contract, entry-level contract. The contract has an average annual value of $867,500.

Bavaro will report to the Bruins’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Providence Bruins on an amateur tryout contract (ATO) for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. Bavaro attended Detroit Red Wings development camp in July 2022.

The 23-year-old right-shot defenseman appeared in 35 games with the University of Notre Dame during the 2023-24 campaign notching 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points in 35 games. Bavaro’s 20 points were tied for first among Fighting Irish defensemen, he ranked first in goals and third in assists.

Bavaro wrapped up his second season with Notre Dame following two years at Bentley University. While playing for the Falcons’ he collected 39 points in 52 games during his two seasons and was named to the NCAA AHA All-Rookie Team in 2021-22 and the NCAA AHA First All-Star Team in 2021-22. Throughout his four-year NCAA campaign, the 6-foot-2, 198-pound defenseman totalled 27 goals and 51 assists for 78 points in 124 games.

Prior to his NCAA tenure, the Lakewood Ranch, Florida product took his talents out West to the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and suited up for the Wenatchee Wild during the 2019-20 season. He scored nine goals and added 24 assists for 33 points in 51 games, he had one assist in five BCHL playoff contests.

Providence ranks second in the Atlantic Division with a 35-17-3-2 record and 75 points through 57 games. The Bruins have 15 games remaining on their schedule until the Calder Cup Playoffs commence. The Bruins will face off against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Friday and Saturday in a back-to-back series.
