The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens don’t usually agree on much, but the longtime rivals were able to find some common ground on Friday when it came to racial tweets aimed at Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban. The wildly talented blueliner was the subject of racist tweets Thursday night, shortly after the Canadiens defeated the Bruins 4-3 in double overtime in Game 1 of their second-round Stanley Cup playoffs series. The Bruins quickly denounced the actions of those “fans” on Friday with a statement, and Bruins players as well as coach Claude Julien ripped those who sent racial messages. Unsurprisingly, the Canadiens lent their support to Subban while simultaneously decrying the behavior of those fans. “I’m shocked,” Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien told reporters Friday, according to the Canadian Press. “Honestly, I’m shocked to hear those type of comments.” Subban didn’t speak with reporters on Friday, but he didn’t seem bothered by the trash that rained down from the Garden crowd after he scored the double-overtime game-winner in Game 1. “He understands the best way to handle it is just ignore it,” forward Brendan Gallagher said, according to the Canadian Press. “And understand that their opinions don’t really mean anything.” Gallagher also said that he understands that the small pocket of fans who sent racist tweets don’t represent the greater portion of Bruins fans. Brendan Gallagher, sensibly, on Twitter/Subban: "Doesn't represent a large mass of their fanbase. It's a small group of ignorant people."— Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) May 02, 2014Filed under: Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, Stanley Cup Playoffs, Top Stories
