Brian Burke fancies himself a tough guy. Yet as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he has gone out of his way to acquire finesse players like Phil Kessel and Tim Connolly.He placed vast faith in maddeningly inconsistent defenseman Dion Phaneuf.So his fourth year at the helm of this storied franchise was the most frustrating. Once again the Leafs missed the playoffs going away.This prompted Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of the board of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, to write an open letter to Leaf fans to apologize for the past season. Also, CEO Tom Anselmi sent an email to Leafs’ season ticket holders echoing this sentiment.That had to embarrass Burke.
