The decision of which goaltender Devils coach Pete DeBoer would start in Tuesday night’s game in Columbus was a pretty simple one. It wasn’t about a bigger picture or a long-term plan. All that mattered was that the Devils defeated the Rangers 4-0 Saturday night with Cory Schneider in net. Schneider posted the 22-save shutout – his first shutout as a Devil – and the team played its most complete game of the season and most importantly earned its first win of the season. Having finally found a winning recipe after losing the first seven games of the season DeBoer doesn’t want to mess with success. That’s why DeBoer said he’ll “probably” dress the same six defensemen Tuesday night and why Schneider will start consecutive games for the first time this season while Martin Brodeur watches again from the bench. “If it was Marty (that played Saturday) I would have made the same decision” DeBoer said. During his 20 years of being the Devils’ unquestioned No. 1 goaltender Brodeur has been on the other side of decisions like this many times so he understands them well. He also understands that the dynamic has changed some since Schneider joined the team in a June 30 trade with Vancouver. “At the end of the day we need some wins and we’ve played well with him so far” Brodeur said. “You might as well try to get a little roll going. That’s one of the things that I think it’s going to be over the next few months because we got ourselves behind the eight ball. We need to win. He’s played more lately too so it’s just the way it is. And he’s played really really well so it’s a pretty easy decision for the coach to make.”
