It’s probably not the best time to talk about the NHL and money, but ignoring Forbes’ latest report won’t lift the lockout. According to Forbes, the most-valuable NHL franchise, the Toronto Maple Leafs, are the first NHL team worth $1 billion, while the Boston Bruins ($348 million) are the fifth-most valuable NHL franchise. The New York Rangers ($750 million) are second-most valuable, followed by the legendary Montreal Canadiens, who are worth $575 million. The Blackhawks are fourth at $350 million. As for the other end of the list, the least valuable of the 30 teams are the St. Louis Blues at $130 million and the Phoenix Coyotes at $134 million. As for your reigning Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings? They’re worth $276 million, putting them 10th overall. The Bruins are up 7 percent from last year and have an operating income of $14.2 million, according to the report. The Leafs, who have not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, are worth $250 million more than the second-ranked Rangers.
