David Pastrnak rejoined the Boston Bruins on Monday after missing the start of training camp with knee tendinitis, but his own words suggest the issue may linger longer than the franchise and its fans would like.
The 29-year-old forward skated on Boston’s top line with Morgan Geekie and Elias Lindholm, returning in time for the team’s first power-play sessions.
Pastrnak told NHL.com's Amalie Benjamin the week off was precautionary and stressed he had dealt with the condition throughout last season.
“I played with that the whole year last year, so I wouldn’t be too worried about it obviously,” Pastrnak said.

Added Pastrnak: “I spent a lot of time in the summer to make it better, and it did get much better than it was last year. Obviously it wasn’t perfect [and] it’s not perfect yet, so it was perfect timing to try to get it even better — it already got better. Like I said, nothing too concerning. It’s just something that’s nagging me for a very long time.”
Pastrnak, however, revealed that the issue was bad enough to alter his offseason training routine, switching from running to biking to ease the stress placed on his knee during workouts.
When pressed about whether the injury could follow him into the season, Pastrnak's answer left room for concern.
“I guess [it ’s] just something that time will tell,” Pastrnak admitted.
As the Bruins’ leading scorer the past three years, Pastrnak has played all 82 games in each of those seasons, finishing last year tied for third in the NHL with 106 points.
Despite his durability, his comments hint at a recurring condition that may resurface during the year.
The Bruins will get their regular season going on Oct. 8 when they face the Washington Capitals on the road.
