Bruins’ Jeremy Swayman drops eye-opening take ahead of do-or-die Game 5

The Boston Bruins are on the brink of elimination after a controversial 3-2 loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference second-round series. Now down 3-1 heading back to Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise — and needing to win three consecutive games to advance — things are looking bleak in Massachusetts.

But Jeremy Swayman remains confident that his team can bring the series back to TD Garden for a Game 6 later this week.

“This is playoff hockey,” Swayman said after the discouraging defeat, per NHL.com’s Amalie Benjamin. “We’d better believe in this reality. The reality is that we’re going to go to Florida, we’re going to play the same game, and we’re going to get it done. I have no doubt in this group. We have a lot of confidence and a lot of motivation to bring it back to Boston because our fans deserve a lot better, and we’re excited to do that.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to get down there and bring it back to Boston,” the star netminder added.

The Bruins looked to be in good shape after winning Game 1 on the road in Florida — in commanding fashion. But it’s been all downhill since then, with the Panthers winning each of the next three, including Sunday night in New England.

Boston led by as much as 2-0 in the waning minutes of the second period, but would watch as Florida scored three unanswered goals — the second after Sam Bennett had cross-checked Charlie Coyle into Swayman — to steal the victory.

With that, the Cats will have an opportunity to knock out the B’s for the second straight postseason. But the series isn’t over yet.

Bruins need to find another road win to extend series

“It’s a tough loss,” head coach Jim Montgomery admitted. “We’ll start looking at ways to improve again tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow,” echoed Coyle, who was held off the scoresheet in Game 4. “Whatever tomorrow calls for. Skate, not skate. Get prepared. Recovering. And then we prepare for that next game. It’s always that next game mentality. Series is not over until someone gets the four games, right? No one’s done that yet.”

And the Bruins will be desperate to make sure that doesn’t happen on Tuesday.

The Bruins have already beaten the Panthers once at Amerant Bank Arena in this series, and they’ll need to do that two more times if they hope to advance to the Eastern Conference Final for the first time since 2019.

Considering how potent Florida has been in the last two postseasons, it’s a wildly uphill climb to say the least. But the Panthers were able to erase a 3-1 series lead against the Bruins in 2023, and Boston will need to do the exact same to avoid elimination.

The squad has already faced an elimination game in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, beating the Toronto Maple Leafs in seven games in Round 1. It’s not unfamiliar territory for the Bruins, and it’ll be all hands on deck to get this series back to New England for Game 6.
