A season-ending concussion limited Marc Savard to only 25 games in the 2010-2011 campaign. Regardless, Savard will have his name inscribed on the Stanley Cup trophy in honor of his contribution to the Boston Bruins.
According to NHL guidelines, a player must play at least 41 games during the regular season or one during the Stanley Cup finals. In extenuating circumstances however, a team is allowed to petition the commissioner for permission to have other names listed on the cup.
Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Monday at the team’s charity golf event that his special request for Savard had been granted by the commish.
A brutal hit from Colorado’s Matt Hunwick — Savard’s second concussion in 10 months — sidelined him for the Bruins’ magical run through the post season. Savard is still suffering from post-concussion symptoms, and Chiarelli said that #91 may officially retire from the NHL.
“He’s not in a good spot still. He still has recurring headaches; he still has post-concussion stuff,” Chiarelli said. “He’s not playing this year. Frankly, I don’t think he’ll play again. That’s my opinion, my layperson’s opinion.”
For his career, Savard amassed 706 total points, collected 207 goals and dished out 499 assists.
