10:15 a.m. ET: So far, so good on the week from hell for the Bruins, but they’ll get another big-time test on Tuesday night. The B’s continue their stretch of five games in seven days with a trip to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins. It marks the second leg of a back-to-back after Boston beat Ottawa 3-2 in a shootout Monday night. The Bruins are now 3-0-0 in the first half of back-to-back games, but they are only 1-1-0 in the back half of those instances so far this season. As expected, the Penguins are among the NHL’s elite teams this season, entering Tuesday’s game in third place in the Eastern Conference, just one point behind the Bruins. The Pens are also red-hot as of late having won five in a row. They’re doing it for the most part recently without one of the best players in the world. Evgeni Malkin missed some time recently with a concussion. He returned briefly, but is out again with what’s being called an upper-body injury. Sidney Crosby once again looks like a Hart Trophy...

Crosby, Kunitz propel hot Penguins

Sidney Crosby tied a career high with five assists, and Chris Kunitz posted his second hat trick of the season in the Pittsburgh Penguins' 6-1 rout of the New York Islanders on Sunday night. Crosby's big night boosted his point total to an NHL-leading 45 and helped the Penguins win their fifth straight. James Neal had a goal and three assists, and Pascal Dupuis scored twice...

Top +/- Rating

There is a new player atop the +/- ratings in the NHL.  It is Chris Kunitz of the Pittsburgh Penguins or Sidney Crosby's left winger.  He has a +22 +/- rating.  While Kunitz is a good player a big part of his league leading +/- comes from playing with Crosby.  Kunitz usually plays with Crosby except for the toughest situations where Crosby double-shifts without him. Kunitz...

Evgeni Malkin flips puck into bucket for epic trick shot (Video)

We here at Outside the Boxscore love trick shots and this one comes to us from the world of hockey as Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin showed off his scoring ability. Watch as he flips a puck from center ice into a bucket near a goal with little effort: (Courtesy of Total Pro Sports)

Broadcast Blooper: ROOT Sports Pittsburgh isn't sure which Sutter plays for the Penguins

Poor Brandon Sutter. The Pittsburgh forward has been compared to his father, Brent, throughout his young NHL career. Will Brandon be as good as Brent? Which will have more points in the NHL when all is said and done? Brent hoisted the Cup twice, will Brandon? You get the idea. Unfortunately for Brandon, these comparisons never stop - even when he was named the Player of the Game...

Claude Julien Moves Into Tie With Milt Schmidt For Second on Bruins’ All-Time Wins List (Video)

Bruins head coach Claude Julien joined some elite company when his team defeated the Senators in a shootout Monday night. The win was Julien’s 245th behind the Bruins bench, tying him for second place on the team’s all-time wins list (the man he’s now tied with, Milt Schmidt, has his number hanging from the rafters at TD Garden). NESN’s Naoko Funayama caught up with the B’s...

Penguins-Maple Leafs Preview

The Pittsburgh Penguins have prevailed in a number of close games during their season-high win streak, including last weekend's visit to the Toronto Maple Leafs. With Evgeni Malkin likely out for a third straight game, the Penguins will try to get past the slumping Maple Leafs again and earn a seventh consecutive victory Thursday night. Pittsburgh (19-8-0) has won by one goal...

24. Boston Bruins at Pittsburgh Penguins. NO MALKIN? NO MERCY!

Man, that banner is like a sleek Accelerator jersey. Black on black baby. Bruins come into Pittsburgh on a three game winning streak after a shootout win against the Senators where Boston comes back from 2 down. It was a tough game for Boston, which doesn't bode well for their legs against the Pens. The only thing that helps Boston is that Malkin is back in Russia...

Chris Kelly Diagnosed With Broken Tibia, Will Be Out Indefinitely

The Bruins may be without Chris Kelly for the long haul. The team announced Wednesday that the third-line center will be out indefinitely after breaking his left tibia Monday against the Senators. Kelly needed to be helped off the ice after a leg-to-leg hit with Ottawa’s Chris Neil. He did not return in Boston’s shootout win and did not dress for the team’s game in Pittsburgh...

This Week In Boston Bruins History: March 10-16

While one Bruins legend turned 95 last week, we look back on the life of another one this week. Also featured, are a double-digit winning streak, milestone victories for a pair of legendary coaches (including also the final win for one of them) and a pair of lasts against two of the teams from the early years of the league. This is This Week In Boston Bruins History. March 10: ...

Chris Kelly Out Indefinitely With Broken Leg

After colliding with the Ottawa’s Chris Neil during Monday night’s Bruins-Senators game, the B’s announced Wednesday that third-line center Chris Kelly will be out indefinitely after a broken left tibia. Kelly needed to be helped off the ice and didn’t return to the game. The recovery period is expected to be around six weeks, but with the shortened season it’s not inconceivable...

Bruins Can’t Blame Fatigue After Another Third-Period Meltdown in Loss to Penguins

The excuses are there if the Bruins want to take them, but they have no one to blame but themselves after their latest third-period stinker. The B’s came into Pittsburgh early Tuesday morning, just hours after playing an overtime game and winning in a shootout over the Senators. After scoring two goals in the first period, the Bruins looked like they were poised to come out of...

Keys To The Game Vs. Ottawa

The Bruins are coming off of a impressive win over the Flyers in a very lack luster Bruins vs Flyers game. The Bruins shutout the Flyers 3-0 in the matinee hockey game. Pialle, Seguin, and Kelly all scored goals in the game. Kellys goal came at a time when his line was struggling. With Jordan Caron back in the lineup the line is +1 and one goal in one game. While Caron might...

Reasons For Expansion

from Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Back when the league was adding the Panthers, Mighty Ducks, Predators and Blue Jackets, complaints were common that the quality of play suffered, that there weren't enough skilled forwards and defensemen. But the global pool is now far deeper. USA Hockey youth registrations have soared since the Florida/Anaheim expansion...
