Exelby has always been a tough defenseman and is always willing to drop the gloves.

The Boston Bruins have signed veteran defenseman Garnet Exelby to a one year contract.  This move will help Providence more than Boston, but Exelby is an adequate option to put into the lineup if an injury occurs to a starting defenseman.  Exelby is a very tough, nasty defenseman who will add much needed toughness to a Providence team that was down right soft last season.  Exelby made a name for himself in the NHL as an Atlanta Thrasher, but has since drifted from team to team and played mostly in the AHL.  I like this move a lot as a fan of the Providence Bruins because of his willingness to fight and play physically.  Providence lacks toughness on the back end, with the exception of Nathan McIver and Kevan Miller, they are very soft.  Exelby will be fun to watch when I go to the games; certainly better than Colby “Cream Puff” Cohen, who is 6’2 210 lbs, but plays like someone half his size.  He barely lays a hand on anyone; Cohen is the wimpiest defenseman I have ever seen in Providence.  I wish all the best to Garnet as a Bruin and I hope to see a lot him this season, hopefully sometimes with his gloves off.

Bruins Add Depth, Competition for Final Spots with Signings of Lane MacDermid, Garnet Exelby

The Bruins still haven't made any major moves this offseason, but they did continue to round out their depth on Wednesday. Boston re-signed restricted free agent forward Lane MacDermid and signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Garnet Exelby, and both will have a chance in camp to compete for spots with the big club. Both players signed one-year, two-way deals. MacDermid will...

Cam Neely, Shawn Thornton Among Top 10 Hockey Player Movie Cameos (Gallery)

Hockey hasn't had the kind of history with Hollywood that baseball, football and boxing have enjoyed. Sure there have been some great hockey films, and we've even broken down the 10 best right here on NESN.com. And there have been some notable additions in recent years, including this past year's entertaining entry to the list with Goon. But while hockey may trail some...

Zdeno Chara rocks out with Slovak band

Who knew Zdeno Chara was an axe man? There are very few things the Bruins captain can't do on the ice, and off the ice he looks to be something of a renaissance man as well. His skills even extend to music as well. The B's blue liner did a little jamming recently at a Slovakian awards show where he was also named Slovakia's top defenseman. As Puck Daddy reports, Chara...

Boston Bruins Sign Son Of Hanson Brother From The Movie Slap Shot

The Brothers, Hanson CSNNE: The Bruins have signed a veteran forward to help their front-line depth, but it’s not a name anybody might have been expecting. The Bruins now have some good size and grittiness depth and will boast all the “Slap Shot” stories they can entertain during training camp as they’ve signed former University of Notre Dame forward Christian Hanson. Hanson...

Tyler Seguin, Milan Lucic and Nathan Horton Expected to Lead Offensive Charge for Bruins

The Bruins have remained quiet this offseason, making the decision to stick with their current roster. With no offseason deals being struck, Bruins fans are turning their thoughts to the upcoming campaign. Tyler Seguin led the Bruins offense last year and is expected to lead the charge again this season. Meanwhile, Milan Lucic has the potential to grow into a perennial 30-goal scorer...

Bruins Haven't Made Big Splash This Offseason, But B's Can Still Be Happy With Smaller Moves

The Bruins haven't had made a handful of small moves this offseason, but they haven't made a big splash at any point, at least not yet. It's probably unlikely that the B's will make any big moves between now and training camp, but even with teams around the leagues wheeling and dealing and making blockbuster moves, Boston likely feels good where they are right now...

Ty Anderson: No Parise, No Nash, and that's OK for Boston

If the Boston Bruins capitalize on the power-play they were gift-wrapped when Jason Chimera got whistled for 'holding' Boston's Johnny Boychuk with 2:26 to play in the third period of Game 7, the Bruins advance on to the second round of the 2012 NHL Playoffs. If Patrice Bergeron can extend his stick out just a bit further in the opening minutes of overtime, the Bruins...

Boston Bruins Not Likely To Trade For Rick Nash

Although the Boston Bruins are on the approved list of teams that Columbus Blue Jackets forward Rick Nash would accept a trade to, do not expect the 2011 Stanley Cup champions to make a push for the talented winger. Nash would love to play for the Bruins next season and beyond. He would be an instant upgrade to Boston’s offense, especially on their anemic power play...

Bruins Could Dangle Tim Thomas in Effort to Land Rick Nash (Video)

The Bruins would love to acquire Rick Nash from the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 28-year-old forward wouldn't mind going to Boston either, as the Bruins were one of six teams on Nash's preferred trade list. The problem facing the Bruins -- as well as the Red Wings, Rangers, Flyers, Penguins and Sharks, who are the other five teams on the list -- is that Blue Jackets general...

Bruins made a play for Parise

The Boston Bruins' offseason of ho-hum continued with the club signing some extra pieces and apparently ready to hit the 2012-13 season with basically the same roster as the one that left the 2012 playoffs in the first round. Oh, and word got out that Boston made an offer to free agent Zach Parise before he signed his 13-year contract to leave the New Jersey Devils and join...

Ty Anderson: Bruins sign veteran Exelby, re-up final two RFAs

Let me make this very clear: Veteran forward Ray Whitney is not walking through that door. One of the game's greats, Jaromir Jagr, is not walking through that door. Rick Nash is not walking through that door. But hey, Garnet Exelby is! What? That's not who you were expecting? Since the start of free agency, Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli has been open about...

Lowell Spinners Will Host 'Speed Dating With Tyler Seguin' Night on Aug. 15

Question: Who is the most eligible (and sought after) bachelor in the Boston area? Answer: The writer of this story, of course. After that, however, there's little doubt that Bruins forward Tyler Seguin is next on the list. Seguin's popularity among Boston sports fans is up there among the city's biggest stars, and there is arguably no one more popular among ladies of...
