New York Islanders
The Colorado Avalanche the opponent Monday night at Consol Energy Center has a stable of young players who appear to be budding stars.
Rookie Nathan MacKinnon 18 Matt Duchene 22 Ryan O'Reilly 22 and Gabriel Landeskog 20 -- all forwards -- are among the key players who helped Colorado carry a 7-1 start into the game.
That's not an anomaly Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said.
He can add Nashville rookie defenseman Seth Jones 19 and Penguins rookie defenseman Olli Maatta 19 to a long list of young players who have stepped into the league and had a rapid impact in recent seasons.
It's not he said a product of evolving systems.
"I don't think the league has changed" Bylsma said.
"There is certainly a thirst to have younger players come into the league maybe quicker than it was years back. I really think the talent and the skill level of the kids -- I say kids but the young players in the game now -- the last five years seven years is completely different t...
BEST OF MAXIM
Don’t look NHL fans but the Colorado Avalanche are off to a start that even the Sakic/Forsberg teams couldn’t compete with, granted it’s still early in the season but new HC Patrick Roy has this young team in the right direction at last. One of those stars is C Matt Duchene, as Connor Flaska (@CFlaska94) […]
Okay, so this may not be news but it's amazing and awesome and why we love Evgeni Malkin off of the ice.
Posted within the last hour, Malkin takes a turn posing in his Halloween costume with his very own Dick Grayson (aka Robin). If anyone is willing to translate we'd be more than happy to give credit where it's due.
If you don't already follow Geno...
Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby isn’t surprised that Colorado Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon is being compared to him. Eight years ago, Crosby scored 10 points (two goals, eight assists) through the first eight games of his rookie season. MacKinnon, the first pick of the 2013 NHL Draft, has scored seven points (one goal, six assists) in his first eight games with the...
It was no secret that the Pittsburgh Penguins weren’t happy
with the way the team exited the playoffs against Boston. The collapse was a colossal embarrassment. My
Gram used to say, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” The Pens entered
the Boston series last season with an envious wealth of talent but failed to
live up to their potential. The inevitable wave of...
On Monday against the Colorado Avalanche, Sidney Crosby put on a conniving little display equivalent of a nasty crossover dribble in basketball. With Crosby stickhandling with his back to him, Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon was trying to stay between Crosby and the net. Crosby faked going toward his right, but went left instead. MacKinnon left to clean his jock up off the...
Welcome to another edition of "Mad Monday" with me "Mad" Chad Nolan. As you know by now this is a forum I use to try to put together my rants in a somewhat formal write-up. Once again there's really not much to be mad about in the world of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pens are in first place in their division and the eastern conference. So is there anything...
Colorado Avalanche (7-1-0) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (7-1-0)
Root Sports, NBCSN, TSN2, RDS2 - 7:30 pm/et
Consol Energy Center - Pittsburgh, PA
There's a part of us/me that has kind of loved the Colorado Avalanche for a while. When the 1996 Florida Panthers eliminated the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Final, they didn't just bring the scourge...

They’re 7-1 and sitting comfortably atop the Metropolitan Division, but how excited should fans be for this Penguins team?
There are reasons to believe this team is already on the cusp of being the best in hockey; there are also some question marks regarding the sustainability of their success.
Let’s start by pointing out the painfully...
The Malik Report has the video explanation of the McLeod suspension.
Some people were mentioning 3-4 games so the 5 games may be a litle higher than what was expected.
The NHL on Monday suspended Avalanche forward Cody McLeod five games without pay for his blindside hit on Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall last week.
McLeod was ejected after being given a five-minute major and a game misconduct penalty in the first period against Detroit on Oct. 17. The Red Wings went on to win that game 4-2 in Denver.
The NHL allowed McLeod an in-person meeting...
Via the Pens:
The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-assigned forwards Chris Conner and Harry Zolnierczyk to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL), it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
As if one couldn't leave well enough alone, via Pro Hockey Talk's Cam Tucker, suspended Colorado Avalanche forward Cody McLeod weighed in on his 5-game sit while speaking with the Denver Post's Mike Chambers, insisting that Red WIngs defenseman Niklas Kronwall's admission of culpability absolves him of some culpability:
"I can see where the NHL is coming...
It comes as little surprise that the Pittsburgh Penguins sit atop the Eastern Conference with Sidney Crosby holding the early edge in the scoring race.
Few may have expected the Colorado Avalanche to get off to such a hot start under first-year coach Patrick Roy.
Pittsburgh seeks a fifth straight victory while looking to remain perfect at home Monday night as it faces a Colorado...
Marc-Andre Fleury has started the season on a tear. His only loss came on Monday night, when his high-powered offense was circumcised. With everyone hoping Fleury's post-season meltdowns are behind him, it's encouraging that he's off to the hottest start of his career.
While examining MAF's career, we decided to check out how the Pens' starting goalies have...
Last night on 412 Sports Talk Mad Chad and Mike "Buzz saw" Asti discussed the Penguins with the great Mike Colligan, broke down the Steelers after their win agains the Ravens, and Chad was mad about .
