Love ‘ Em & Hate ‘Em Boxscore | Recap The shootout is a fickle beast. The glorified coin toss can be so random yet determines whether the 65 minutes prior was an effort good enough for a win or bad enough for a loss. For the second straight game, the Canucks blew a 2-0 lead to an Albertan team and decided the game in a shootout. On Sunday, the Oilers “won” and panic ensued. Wednesday, the coin went the other way and the Canuck nation can be happy with the first win of the year. Strange way to determine a game. Love ‘Em 1. KA$$IAN It’s only three games, says Jeff Cowan, but Zack Kassian may be closer to achieving potiental than expected. Right now, he’s the player Canuck fans have dreamed of lining up with the Sedins since their draft. He’s the white whale of the NHL, a bruising power forward with the hands of a sniper, in the vein of Todd Bertuzzi or Milan Lucic. His shootout goal was sick, but his best play came when he bowled over Miikka Kiprusoff. He picked up a penalty, but notice that no Flames came in to adminster justice for touching their goalie. He has opponents shook right now. Welcome to the NHL rookie! 2. The Schneiderman John Garrett made a night out of pointing out all three Flames’ goals were scored by posts, as Cory had some weird luck but also made a number of fantastic saves. Dominant in the shootout as well, this was an important game for Cory to get the monkey, and the city, off his back. Still, there might be a bit of an adjustment period for Cory as a starter. Just ask Luongo: Mo’ Starts, Mo’ Problems. 3. Macy Raymond The Canucks second goal was a shocker by Mason Raymond who made a perfect shot into the top corner. It’s been an encouraging start to the year for Raymond, who’s traditionally struggled to find his footing in the line-up. Hate ‘Em 1. Schroeder might be in the doghouse Jordan Schroeder’s first period holding penalty wasn’t a great start for JS to get in AV’s good books, who has a patronage style of doling out ice time. Schroeder was pushed around a bit as well, but got better as the game went on. We’ll see if it was enough to please Vigneault. 2. But seriously shootouts As much as I can whine about them, they’re not going away. Main problem is that the Canucks aren’t built for shootouts. The Sedins aren’t wired for it. See Daniel tonight or Henrik anytime. Alex Burrows is capable, Mason Raymond can surprise once every five times, and Zack Kassian might be a core choice but the Canucks don’t have guys they can lean on to get that extra point. Hope that doesn’t come back to haunt them. 3. Edler on the right side It’s been an adjustment period for Alex Edler. Despite having two goals in the first two games, he’s looked shaky positionally on the right side. The theory was that Jason Garrison would be the one experimenting on that side, and if Edler doesn’t grasp the side soon, it may just come to that. Notes: Kiprusoff surpassed the 35,000-minute plateau with four minutes remaining in the third period. Cory Schneider yielded five goals on 14 shots in a season-opening loss to Anaheim on Saturday. Recalled from Chicago of the American Hockey League on Tuesday, 2009 first-round pick C Jordan Schroeder had 19 shifts in his NHL debut.
