NorthWest Sports Beat:
Time for another Canucks gameday team & opponent scouting report.
The Vancouver Canucks are in California for their first road trip of the shortened season. The first stop for the boys is in Anaheim tonight. Vancouver will be looking for a little revenge on the Ducks who spanked them 7-3 during the season opener at Rogers Arena on the 19th.
Cory Schneider is getting the start in goal tonight, in the first of three games in four nights.
Schneider, who let in five goals on fourteen shots on Saturday, should have a bounce back game against the Ducks tonight as the Canucks look to spoil the Ducks home opener.
Not with the team today is center Manny Malhotra, whose wife gave birth this morning. He is expected to join the team tomorrow.
Speaking of center’s, Maxim Lapierre didn’t skate yesterday before the Canucks boarded a plane for California, it’s been reported he has a sore groin, but will play tonight against the Ducks.
Slotting in for Malhotra will be Andrew Ebbett. In two games this season, Ebbet is -1 with zero shots on goal, averaging just over 12 minutes of ice time per game. He’ll likely take fourth line duties for the Canucks.
Expect the Canucks will go with the same line combinations they had against the Flames on Wednesday, with the subtraction of Malhotra and the addition of Andrew Ebbett.
Daniel Sedin- Henrik Sedin – Zach Kassian
Chris Higgins Alex Burrows Jannik Hansen
Mason Raymond Jordan Schroeder Dale Weise
Aaron Volpatti Maxim Lapierre Andrew Ebbett
Dan Hamhuis Kevin Bieksa
Jason Garrison Alex Edler
Keither Ballard Chris Tanev
What the Canucks need to do to win:
NO SLEEP FOR YOU! Not with the team today is center Manny Malhotra, whose wife gave birth this morning.
Stay out of the penalty box.
Vancouver comes into tonight’s game against the Ducks with the third worst penalty kill in the league. They need to be especially careful because the Ducks are an impressive 60% with the man advantage.
The Canucks power play also needs some work.
Going 3/13 in the first three games of the season, Canucks man advantage is rankled 13th in the league.
Henrik and Daniel need to have a “Sedin like” game in order for the Canucks to win. With Zack Kassian likely to play along side the twins for the second straight game, it would be nice to see this line set the pace for the game early and carry it throughout.
Coming off his first win of the season against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, Schneider will get his first consecutive starts of the season.
With the 7-3 loss on opening night fresh in his mind, watch for Schneider to spoil the Ducks home opener the way they spoiled the Canucks.
If the Canucks can keep out of the box, get their power play going, have a ‘Sedin like’ game from the brothers and some solid goaltending they should win the game tonight against the Ducks.
Thanks for reading. Have a great weekend.

While searching out a picture of Zack Kassian for my piece on the Canucks shootout strategy, I discovered that Zack Kassian has taken a lot of priceless photos in his short stint as a pro hockey player. He’s halfway through his second season as a pro and the internet is already full of amazingly hilarious photos of the big curly haired missing tooth beauty.

Now that the NHL lockout is over, the Green Men are back and better than ever as they attended the Vancouver Canucks season opener at the Rogers Centre last Saturday against the Anaheim Ducks.
In the third period, Force and Sully got to mess with Ducks right winger Teemu Selanne as he was sent to the penalty box for two minutes for tripping. With the NHL is now enforcing a rule...
With the NHL finally showcasing the best the league has to offer on the ice instead of during contentious mediation sessions, the NHL’s notoriously dedicated and loyal fans for the most part have returned in droves. And not only regular folks like we common folks of the Joe Six-Pack and Jane Box-of-Wine ilk. We’re talking about the beautiful people: The stars of stage and screen...

Hot off the heels of their first victory of the year, the Canucks did one better and stuffed the Ducks like they were foie gras.
It was easily the best game of the year for Vancouver, and fitting revenge for last weekend.
This was one of those flawless victories. I mean, Zack Kassian scored again and Jordan Schroeder picked his first...

The shootout is a fickle beast. The glorified coin toss can be so random yet determines whether the 65 minutes prior was an effort good enough for a win or bad enough for a loss.
For the second straight game, the Canucks blew a 2-0 lead to an Albertan team and decided the game in a shootout. On Sunday, the Oilers “won” and panic...
It doesn’t take a vivid imagination to connect Roberto Luongo to the Edmonton Oilers. The injury-depleted Vancouver Canucks desperately need a Top 6 forward. They are eager to move Luongo and his massive contract. The Oilers have lots of second- and third-line forward options, including Sam Gagner. As luck would have it, Sam’s father Dave works for the Canucks. With 900-year-old...

Times are getting better on the west coast. The Canucks are winning again. The intro music was, well⦠better â a lot better in fact, although I'm not sure if it's better than U2. And Zack Kassian is looking like a God.
After a scoreless first period, that saw both teams exchange...
CANUCKS (1-1-1) at DUCKS (2-0-0)
Location: Honda Center in Anaheim, CA
- The Anaheim Ducks open the home portion of the schedule against the Vancouver Canucks; the same team they thrashed on the road, 7-3, to begin the season.
- The key here is to forget what happened on opening night and look at the big picture. Anaheim is trying to start the season 3-0 in an effort to establish...

Shortened Season Tips
We have all been so excited that Canucks hockey is back (unless you are still bitter and ‘boycotting’ the NHL) that we haven’t really had time to analyze the season the way we usually do.
This shortened season will prove interesting regarding playoff races, which will essentially begin next month.
The Canucks still haven’t set up any deal to trade Roberto...
