Chris Hadfield is an astronaut and a Canadian hero. He is currently stationed at the International Space Station, and on Monday night, he took part in the ceremonial puck drop before the Toronto Maple Leafs held their home opener at Air Canada Centre against the Buffalo Sabres. Hadfield is an Ontario native and a Maple Leafs fan, so I’m sure it was quite a thrill to take part in the event. Speaking of thrills, how crazy is it to find out that there are Canadian astronauts? That’s pretty neat. Good for them. To add some sense of unneeded realism to the ceremonial puck drop, former Maple Leafs goaltender Felix Potvin “caught” Hadfield’s puck drop before handing it off to former Maple Leafs greats Darcy Tucker and Darryl Sittler. Pretty impressive. I only wonder how many people at the arena really thought the puck Hadfield dropped was the one Potvin caught. Between the thrill of the home opener and a couple of beers or twelve, Maple Leafs fans can be pretty gullible when it comes to their beloved team. Let’s be honest here, a good portion of the fans in attendance believe this could finally be the year the Leafs return to Stanley Cup Finals glory.
