RALEIGH, N.C. The final home game of the 2011-12 season for the Carolina Hurricanes wasn't a conclusion to an overall disappointing season. The 'Canes are now 33-32-16 after beating the Montreal Canadiens in a shootout Thursday night at PNC Arena. They were eliminated from the playoff hunt a week ago, but this night was more like the first game of next season. Actually, about the last 35 have seemed that way. Once Kirk Muller began implementing his system after being hired Nov. 28, replacing fired former coach Paul Maurice, the Hurricanes started playing quality hockey. It certainly entertained the fans more than Maurice's approach. The 'Canes have played faster, shifts were shortened to better allow them to maximize giving full effort every time on the ice and the general vibe around the franchise has dramatically changed. This wasn't a total turnaround, but it was impressive nonetheless. Now the question is, can the Hurricanes build off how they closed thi...

Staal's shootout goal hands Hurricanes victory

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- One of the "Erics" from the Carolina Hurricanes' glory days seemed destined to make the biggest play Thursday night. Cam Ward was just glad it was the one who's still with the team. Eric Staal scored the only goal in the shootout to lead Carolina past the Montreal Canadiens, 2-1 in the Hurricanes' home finale. Chad LaRose scored on the...

Welsh goes from Frozen Four to NHL

It's been a whirlwind few days for Jeremy Welsh: First the Frozen Four, then his NHL debut. The forward is expected to skate for the Carolina Hurricanes at Florida on Saturday night. That's less than 48 hours after his Union College team lost in the NCAA semifinals and he signed with Carolina as a college free agent. ''I want to see him play, and I'm sure he...

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Montreal Canadiens 4/5/12 Scoring Chances

History was made last night at the PNC Arena as the Hurricanes on their first shootout of the 2011-12 season. It only took them 81 games and seven attempts but they finally came out on the winning side of the skills competition and it was nice to finally get the monkey off their back there. Sure, the odds of winning a shootout is the equivalent of flipping a coin, but when you'...

The matchup game

Whenever I write my scoring chance recap or any kind of stats, it is important to remember that the raw numbers need to be taken into context. Not all ice time is created equal as some players are used in tougher situations than others, making it more difficult for them to drive play in the right direciton. I have discussed zone starts numerous times before and how much of an effect...
