Cam Ward made 30 saves in his first shutout of the season and the Carolina Hurricanes snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Blackhawks 3-0 on Friday night.
Tim Brent scored on a deflection and Brandon Sutter and Jiri Tlusty added third-period goals for the Hurricanes, who claimed their first win since Oct. 18 at Boston.
Corey Crawford stopped 30 shots for the Blackhawks, who were beaten in regulation for the first time since opening night.
They entered with a two-point lead in the Central Division, but were shut out for the first time this season and remained winless at the RBC Center, which opened in 1999.
Carolina entered in fourth place in the Southeast Division, five points behind Washington, and is hoping to make some progress in the standings during a stretch in which they play nine of 14 games at home.
In earning his first shutout since he blanked Detroit last April, and 17th of his career, Ward improved to 3-0-1 against the Blackhawks.
