A bizarre sequence of events in the final minute of the Devils-Hurricanes game led to a 4-2 Carolina win, thanks to an empty netter credited to Canes goalie Cam Ward, which had absolutely nothing to do with Ward so much as it was the result of an errant pass by Devils winger Ilya Kovalchuk.

With goaltender Johan Hedberg pulled for the extra attacker, the Devils were buzzing in the Hurricanes end when Kovalchuk tried passing back to the point, only to have his defenseman miss the intended pass.  The puck traveled the length of the ice and into the net, and since he was the last Carolina player to touch the puck, Ward was given credit for the goal, thus becoming the first netminder since Nashville’s Chris Mason in 2006 to score a goal.

Video follows the jump…

While it’s cool that Ward got credit for scoring, even though he didn’t actually shoot or anything, it’s even better that despite being a goalie, he now has more goals on the season than Habs center Scott Gomez.
