Fox Sports Carolinas:
The Hurricanes are trying to put a bad three-day stretch behind them. They lost twice at home, and there was no positive spin coming after Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Dallas Stars.
"We gave up 10 goals at home in the last two games," coach Paul Maurice said. "That's just not enough fight."
It's a month into the season, and the Hurricanes are already sounding concerned. They've failed to impose their style of play on opponents, and without enough converting around the net on offense it's not a good mixture.
Sometimes they've played more efficiently on the road. So that means Tuesday night's game at New Jersey might be the right tonic if the Hurricanes put forth the effort to make it turn out that way.
"It wouldn't matter who we play next," Maurice said. "The fight is going to have to be there or we're not going to beat anybody right now playing like that."
Maurice sometimes likes to put a positive twist on how the team has played. He didn't go anywhere near that after the past weekend.
NOTES, QUOTES
The Hurricanes made their first in-game goalie change of the season when G Cam Ward was replaced by G Brian Boucher during the second period of Sunday's loss. Defensemen largely took responsibility for letting Ward down. "There's nothing worse (than seeing that happen)," D Tim Gleason said of a goalie skating off during a substitution. On the flip side, it became the home debut for Boucher, who has started three games on the road.
At least the Hurricanes figured out some of their power-play woes. Now they have just about everything else to address. The misery on the power play dimmed as both of their goals came on power-play tallies in the 5-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Sunday. Yet it wasn't all good because the Hurricanes also surrendered a goal during one of their power plays.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"Just soft on pucks all over the ice. We lost every battle. ... They came down the ice and beat us. I don't have an explanation for it." -- Coach Paul Maurice, pointing out that Sunday was the first time this season that the team came out without signs of a spark at the start.

Trading Jamie McBain
There was a time when the the Hurricanes were carrying nine defensemen on the roster but that number has now dwindled down to seven, but you can still make the argument that Carolina has eight NHL-ready defensemen in their system, which is why there has been a lot of buzz about Carolina possibly trading one of their spare defenseman. I am all for keeping Justin Faulk in Charlotte...
Eric Staal Says Brother Marc's Career Isn't Over
Dan Rosen at NHL.com was able to speak to Eric Staal about the status of brother Marc who has been suffering from post concussion syndrome as a result of a hit by his older brother..."It's a process -- a slow process, but it's a process," Eric said. "He will be back. He's going to play again. His career in hockey isn't over. It's going to take some...
Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes 11/4/11 Scoring Chances
I would mark this game as one of the most frustrating losses of the year. Judging from the boxscore, the Canes were overmatched and blown out but the truth is that Carolina was in this game for a long time and had multiple opportunities to come back but failed and had yet another third period meltdown. I would put this on the same level as the Flyers and Lightning games in terms...

Dallas Stars vs. Carolina Hurricanes 11/6/11 Scoring Chances
I have defended the powerplay for weeks now because while they weren't scoring goals, they were at least creating chances and getting shots on net. That's all I really wanted to see after how terrible it was last season in both areas but I have almost nothing positive to say about how the powerplay performed the last two games. Against Washington, they had four opportunities...

Week 4 Performances
In a week where the Canes were 1-2-0 and outscored 12-7 there are bound to be very few positives. That's pretty much what the case is for this past week. With all three games being at home, I expected much better from Carolina and they got off to a good start with a 4-2 win over Tampa Bay, but the next two games were disasters. It's even more frustrating when you bring up...
