It didn't take Chad LaRose long to make an impact in his first game back from injury. His shorthanded goal at 2:53 has given the Canes a 1-0 lead after the first period.
LaRose, out the last seven games with a lower-body injury, scored unassisted after an interference penalty on Alex Picard. Leafs goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere attempted to play the puck behind the net but whiffed on it, and a hustling LaRose collected it and scored.
It was LaRose's fourth goal of the season and first since Jan. 24. It was the Canes' fifth shortie of the season and the first by LaRose. ...

There was concern before the game about Staal and Tim Gleason fighting Olympic fatigue but both played well in the opening period. ...
Justin Peters, making his third NHL start, had 10 saves in the first. ......
