from Katie Carrera of Capitals Insider, Seconds after Chris Kelly’s shot found its way into the net past Braden Holtby’s outstretched glove, the Capitals’ netminder found himself surrounded by his teammates. Washington’s 1-0 overtime loss in Game 1 wasn’t one the team was going to lay at the feet of their 22-year-old rookie goaltender, from whom near perfection was required to even reach that stage of the contest.
“I think he played a hell of a game,” Alex Ovechkin said of Holtby. “Most of the time, he kept us in the game and I think he was nervous, but after the first shot you could see he was calm and he was on his roll.”
Holtby finished with a stellar 29-save showing in his first ever appearance in the Stanley Cup playoffs. It was an outing that reinforced the Capitals’ faith in the Saskatchewan native and also left a strong first impression on the Bruins.

Through 60 minutes, neither the Bruins or the Capitals were able to put the puck on net. But a mere 78 seconds into sudden-death overtime and Chris Kelly pushed the Bruins to a 1-0 series lead. Through 60 minutes of play in Game 1, the Boston Bruins couldn't connect on any of the 61 shots they attempted. Peppering rookie netminder Braden Holtby for 29 shots through three periods, with the Caps blocking 15 and the B's whiffing on 10 of their own, the Washington...

At one end of the ice, playoff MVP Tim Thomas will be in goal for the defending champion Boston Bruins. At the other end, Braden Holtby will make his NHL playoff debut in the Washington Capitals' net.
That should give Boston a big advantage in Thursday night's playoff opener.
It also could be a trap if the Bruins are overconfident.

With the Bruins, it always starts with defense. Chris Kelly's overtime winner in Thursday's 1-0 Game 1 win over the Capitals was no different. Greg Zanon slowed up Marcus Johansson on a 1-on-1, Tim Thomas made the pad save on the shot, and then Joe Corvo started the breakout with a quick chip up the boards.
From there, Brian Rolston moved it quickly to Benoit Pouliot, who...
The Bruins snuck out of the TD Garden on Thursday night with a 1-0 win over the Capitals in overtime. While it's important to get that ever-important first win of the series, the B's struggled to figure out young netminder Braden Holtby -- that is, until Chris Kelly beat him with a slapper just a couple minutes into extra time.
