There was no denying that Cory Schneider wanted to beat his former Vancouver Canuck teammates Tuesday night.
More than that though the Devils goaltender wanted to get his team its first win of the season.
Fittingly it came down to a duel between Schneider and his old goaltending partner Roberto Luongo that needed overtime to be decided. Defenseman Jason Garrison gave Vancouver a 3-2 victory with his goal 2:18 into the extra session at Rogers Arena.
Schneider said never saw Garrison’s right point wrist shot sailed in over his left shoulder thanks to Mike Santorelli’s screen in front.
“I saw Garrison walk to the middle there and kind of looked one way and the next thing you knew it was in the net” Schneider said. “There was just some traffic there and I didn’t work hard enough to find it.”
Now 0-1-3 the Devils have lost their opening four games for the first time since 2001-02 when they got off to a 0-3-1 start.
