Note: Sorry for no post this morning, there was a scheduling issue.
With both Arron Asham and Martin Biron assigned to the AHL yesterday, the Rangers cleared a total of $1.85 million in cap space ($925k a piece). Although their cap hits are higher (Asham â $1 million, Biron â $1.3 million), the âRedden Ruleâ means that they donât get to bury the entire contract. Ashamâs contract will remain with a $75k cap hit, and Bironâs with a $375k cap hit (unless he retires, then they get the full $1.3 million back).
With Talbot ($562,500) and Miller (approximately $894k) called up, the additional cap taken up is $1.45 million between the two. At the moment, the Rangers have saved about $400k in cap space. That could climb to $775k if Biron retires. Not exactly chump change.
There should be another roster move or two coming, as Carl Hagelin will need to come off LTIR. His $2.25 million will need to count towards the cap again when he returns.

Veteran goalie Martin Biron and rugged forward Arron Asham are being assigned by the New York Rangers to Hartford of the AHL after clearing waivers.
The moves were announced on Tuesday, one day after the players were placed on waivers following New York's rough 1-4 start to the season. The Rangers recalled center J.T. Miller and goalie Cam Talbot from Hartford to replace them...
Definition of essential: Ryan Callahan
Itâs always easier to write the Musings after a win. Last night was a huge relief to many Rangers fans so letâs talk about it.
John Moore: If Moore continues with performances like against the Capitals then he could quickly go past Mike Del Zotto in the pecking order. A quick release, a good overall game and solid defensively, Moore still...

No doubt about it, the Rangers have been incredibly underwhelming to start the season. They were outplayed in Phoenix, dismantled by Anaheim and San Jose, and bested by St. Louis (although they played well in that game). If not for strong showings in Los Angeles last week and Washington last night, we would be talking about the winless Rangers, not the 2-4 Rangers...
One or both of Miller and Kreider are expected to be recalled today.
After Arron Asham and Martin Biron were placed on waivers yesterday, there was a lot of discussion about what moves the Rangers would be making. I heard everything from a trade (no specifics, just âthey are going to make a tradeâ) to a much more rational call up. In my humble opinion, the Rangers arenât going...
The injury bug continues to haunt the Rangers, as the club has announced that Ryan Callahan is out 3-4 weeks with a broken thumb. This is certainly terrible news for a team that appeared to be finding its groove under AV. It is assumed Cally will be placed on LTIR. Darroll Powe has been recalled from Hartford to take Callyâs spot on the roster.
Goaltender Jason Missiaen has also...
Monday was a tough day for the Rangers and they didnât even play a game.
Coach Alain Vigneault said after practice in Greenburgh that right wing Rick Nash âis still feeling some symptomsâ from Tuesdayâs concussion in San Jose and the team placed Nash on injured reserve.
âUntil I hear otherwise I donât expect him backâ Vigneault said.
Nash has missed two games already...
In response to Cam Talbot being recalled to the Rangers and Martin Biron deciding his future since demotion, the Hartford Wolfpack have promoted goalie Jeff Malcolm from the ECHLâs Greenville Road Warriors. Malcolm was part of the first round of cuts from Rangers camp in September, and then was cut from Hartford two weeks later.
The ECHL has not started their season yet, so there...
Henrik Lundqvist earned his 46th NHL shutout, Brad Richards assisted on two New York goals less than two minutes apart in the second period, and the Rangers beat familiar postseason foe Washington 2-0 on Wednesday night to end a three-game losing streak.
Richards helped set up goals by Ryan Callahan and John Moore, and Lundqvist made the limited offense hold up in a 22-save performance...
With power forward Rick Nash already sidelined with post-concussion syndrome and Carl Hagelin still recovering from postseason shoulder injury, the New York Rangers could scarcely afford to lose Ryan Callahan to a broken thumb. But they did. The feisty team captain suffered the injury blocking a shot during a 2-0 victory over the Capitals. He figures to miss the next three to four...
Playoffs or regular season, New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist has been absolutely perfect the past three times he has faced Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.
So what if the Rangers were struggling under first-year coach Alain Vigneault? Lundqvist felt good about his team's chances Wednesday night, then backed that up with his 46th NHL shutout in New York'...
The good vibes for the Rangers did not last long, as it was announced on Thursday that Ryan Callahan will miss 3-4 weeks with a broken thumb suffered in the win over Washington. In his stead, the team called up Darroll Powe as well as Jason Missiaen and sent down Cam Talbot, who was just promoted to replace Martin Biron.
New York is now without Rick Nash (concussion), Carl Hagelin...
WASHINGTON â Nothing has gone the way of the New York Rangers this season. Through the teams first five games nothing was going their way nor were they playing up to their full potential. With guys like Brad Richards, Ryan Callahan, Henrik Lundqvist, and Rick Nash on paper this should be a tough team. Wednesday [âŚ]
Letâs face it. Before last night, we all could agree that the Rangers have had a pretty brutal road trip. Granted, the trip included tough games against some supercharged Western Conference teams, but it was still no excuse for scoring only nine goals and letting in an abominable 25 in just four games. Then, last [âŚ]

The New York Rangers are off to a simply abysmal start with a 1-4-0 record and a minus-16 goal differential so something has to change. On Monday GM Glen Sather made the first moves. Joining the waiver wire on Monday were forward Arron Asham as well as veteran backup goaltender Martin Biron. Biron being cut is a surprise even though his numbers are as bad as you'll see in the...
