from Mike Wise of the Washington Post, The Washington Capitals have mortgaged their strong start to the season with passion-less play over the past month, exemplified by Saturday night’s listless effort in Toronto. The Caps have lost seven of their last 11 games, mixing in the occasional stand with mucho malaise, so naturally, all the tired cliché are being dragged out for Coach Bruce Boudreau. “He’s lost the locker room.” Really? Did the players and their cubicles magically go poof, like a misplaced set of car keys? “They’ve stopped playing for him.” I’m imagining a players-only meeting ending with the team captain proclaiming, “That’s it; we all agree: We need to lose one for Coach tonight.” The truth is, only one person is emotionally missing from the Capitals’ locker room, and everyone inside that cocoon knows who it is. It’s the guy who looks like a shell of his former self, who hasn’t scored in four games and doesn’t even look interested in playing hockey right now. Unti

Is something wrong with Ovechkin?

The Washington Capitals superstar has struggled out of the gate this season -- at least according to the standards he has set throughout his career -- notching 7 goals and recording only 15 total points.

Jersey Fouls Extra: Things are different for Alex Ovechkin in D.C.

Defenseman Dmitry Orlov is making his NHL debut for the Washington Capitals tonight against the Phoenix Coyotes, and News From The Nosebleeds decided to commemorate the occasion … by doctoring up an Alex Ovechkin T-shirt. OK, so they needed the 'O' and the '8'. Still, the sight of this thing at a time when Alex Ovechkin is getting criticized for his lack of production...

Play Ovechkin

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post, So I look at Alex Ovechkin’s pedestrian numbers and forget the seven goals and 14 points in the first 17 games. The one that leaps off the page as most pertinent and most inexplicable is the 18:43 of ice time per game that as of Friday ranked — get this — 67th in the league among forwards who have played at least 10 games. Then I hear Bruce...

Alex Ovechkin to Grant Wish of Make-A-Wish® Child

ARLINGTON, Va. - Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will meet with Ellie Carney, 18, after the Capitals game against the New York Rangers at Verizon Center on Friday, Nov. 25. Ellie was born with Oral-Facial-Digital Syndrome Type 1 (OFD1) a...

The Capitals rift: Boudreau wants Ovechkin to change, he refuses

The factors behind the Washington Capitals' recent swoon (3-6-1) and overall problems don't all trace back to Alex Ovechkin. Or do they? He's the captain and the catalyst, and Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post noted that in the Capitals' seasonal nadir — a 7-1 loss to the Maple Leafs — "Ovechkin's disinterest, it seemed, trickled down to everyone...

Washington Fans Not Happy After 7-1 Loss To The Leafs

Just a few examples from a game post at Capitals Insider which picks up twitter comments, And I think @GreenLife52 will make a difference Is #caps trying to send a message to Bruce? Maybe its finally time to change things up. I’m for closed practices. Stop the circus. Stop the distraction. Work on the team. Yeah, I said it Caps don’t like the fact that it’s not a free ride...

Big Two Update

Ever since the NHL came back from the 2004/05 season that was lost due to the lockout, the story had been that Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby were developing into and soon became the two best players in the league.  By that story line, now that Ovechkin is 26 years old and Crosby is 24 years old, they should be closing in on their primes and their dominance should be near...

Crosby’s Triumphant Return: The Return of the Hockey Superstar(s?)

Since the locked out season of 2004-05, the NHL has been defined by two superstar players: Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin. This season could be the best the NHL has seen in a long time, especially ratings-wise, with the NBA locked out for the entire season. Yet, it seems like something has been missing in NHL play to date this season. And that something has been star power...

Alex Ovechkin on Sidney Crosby’s return: ‘Good for him’

WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin broke a four-game pointless streak with an assist in Monday night's Washington Capitals win over Phoenix. Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby closed to within 11 points of Ovechkin's season total over 19 games in just his first game of the season. Oversaturation of the Sidney vs. Ovi rivalry acknowledged, they remain inexorably linked on a...
