The Washington Capitals have signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Garrett Stafford and restricted free agent defenseman Kevin Marshall to one-year contracts.
Stafford, 32, is an AHL-level offensive defenseman. He has appeared in 7 career NHL games for Detroit, Dallas, and Phoenix, posting 2 assists. He spent last season split between Hamilton and Portland of the AHL. He is unlikely to play in Washington this season.
Marshall, 23, was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers on Groundhog Day for minor-league forward Matthew Ford. Marshall appeared in 10 games for the Flyers this season and had a cameo appearance in HBO's "24/7." He played 68 games in the AHL split between Adirondack and Hershey. Marshall, a second-round pick of the Flyers in 2007, may get a cup of coffee in the NHL this season with the Capitals.
