It was Nicklas Backstrom Garden Gnome Giveaway Night on Tuesday at the Verizon Center in D.C.  as the Washington Capitals hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs. And by the looks of all the photos uploaded to the interwebs, a grand time was had by one and all. Especially those who were fortunate enough to get their hands on one of the adorable little Garden Gnomes, not to mention the many incarnations of the little bugger itself, who was photographed all over the arena posing, taking in the sights and enjoying the game. That is if we assume that the Nicklas Backstrom Garden Gnomes are actually alive. It’s possible, isn’t it? Look into its eyes. Don’t tell me there isn’t a spark in those peepers. While the reactions by Backstrom’s Capitals teammates and their opinions of the peculiar little Garden Gnome can be characterized as mixed at best, many of the 18,000 fans who received one appeared delighted and enjoyed showing off their newest Capitals keepsake. Oh, and we mustn’t forget t...

Capitals give out Nicklas Backstrom Gnomes

During last night’s home game against the Maple Leafs (another loss), the Washington Capitals handed out Nicklas Backstrom Gnome’s to the first 18,000 fans in attendance. This prompted twitter to explode with fans taking all kinds of pictures with the Backstrom Gnome doing different things like watching the game, drinking a beer, or otherwise just having a good old gnome time...

The fall of Alex Ovechkin

The talk of the NHL these days is the fall of the Washington Capitals and Alex Ovechkin in particular. This is a pretty telling table in regards to Ovechkin’s fall in offensive production. Stats are Ovechkin’s 5v5 stats over the past 6 seasons. Season TOI G A Pts Shots Sh% TOI/G TOI/Shot 2012-13 149:14 0 [...]The post The fall of Alex Ovechkin appeared first on HockeyAnalysis.com.

Sergei Fedorov likely to take a bow with CSKA Moscow

When Sergei Fedorov was hired as CSKA Moscow's general manager last summer as part of a Vladimir Putin's impetus to rejuvenate Moscow's professional hockey teams, and coming with Fedorov's hiring was an infusion of cash via a sponsorship deal with Russia's second-largest oil and natural gas giant, Rosneft (the largest oil and natural gas company, Gazprom, is a...

Is Alexander Ovechkin coming back to life?

To good news for Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin: Capitals coach Adam Oates in playing with offensive players again, Wojtek Wolski and Mike Ribeiro. The bad news: Oates really wants to see what he can do at right wing, where Ovechkin isn’t as comfortable. Alex has yet to score an even-strength goal this season. At least he got busy offensively during Washington’s grim...

No Need To Move Ovechkin

from Neil Greenberg of the Washington Post, I get it. The outlook is grim. The Capitals are in last place in the NHL with a 2-7-1 record and will likely miss the playoffs. They have a minus-13 goal differential (worst in league) and have yet to score more than three goals in a game. Their penalty kill is ranked 23rd in the league, which is compounded by the fact they have...

Fehr Thinks of Caps as “a Pretty Old Team”

“I’ve never experienced a start to a season like this,” Karl Alzner said after the Capitals’ 3-2 loss Tuesday to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Capitals, however briefly, have the worst record in hockey right now, although they’ve played three more games than the Calgary Flames, who are second to last. The regression has been across the board. The offense does not produce...

The Last Place Team

In a shortened season the effect of a fast or slow start will be more significant than in a normal season.  The team currently in last place is far from the weakest team in the NHL but they are off to a slow start.  The Washington Capitals have a 2-8 record with one regulation tie point for a total of five points.  This is currently the worst record in the NHL.  This result...

Rock The Brock: All Clear

Turning the corner?-The Hershey Bears welcomed the Manchester Monarchs into town last Saturday as well as 2 new players on their own roster. Zach Hamill and Mathieu Beaudoin were traded for Casey Wellman and Peter LeBlanc respectively. They certainly added some jump to the roster as the Bears put up a season high 44 shots and walked away with a great 2-1 team win with Philipp Grubauer...

Hockey, Improving The High School Experience By Hurting Everyone There

I really enjoyed watching this commercial for a Michigan-area high school hockey game between schools Clarkston and Lake Orion, but I can’t settle on a reason why. What I have so far includes:1. As a Washington Capitals fan, the NHL is basically the saddest thing to me ever right now, and I have to remember that I like the sport whether or not it’s crushing my will to live.2...
