If you thought Thursday’s Capitals vs. Jets game had one of the weirdest endings of any recent NHL game, you’re not alone. Four goals in the third period–one on a Dustin Byfuglien shot from center ice that deflected off Karl Alzner’s stick– sent a game that had been previously scoreless into overtime and finally a shootout (which the Capitals lost in three rounds; their shooters were Ovechkin, Semin, and Perreault, with only Ovechkin scoring). Yes, it’s disconcerting the Capitals blew a 2-0 lead in the third. But Byfuglien’s goal to tie the game was hands down one of those fluke hockey plays that have to be considered outliers rather than indicative of poor defensive play. More frustrating was the huge role played by the penalties that the Capitals took late in the game, which gave the Jets a chance for a 6 on 3. Ted Starkey and yours truly analyze different aspects of Thursday’s game below, and how Brooks Laich’s minutes are b...

Washington Capitals Prospect Stanislav Galiev Cleared To Play

Brooks Laich, Alex Ovechkin, Dennis Wideman All Get The Day Off

The Washington Capitals held a 40-minute practice Wednesday at KCI, but with a tough stretch of games coming up, Alex Ovechkin, Brooks Laich, and Dennis Wideman were all given the day off by coach Dale Hunter. Hunter explained that at this point of the season the coaching staff likes to give players off during tough stretches. The Capitals schedule for the next few days include games...

George McPhee, Nicklas Backstrom, and the Trading Deadline

The game of ice hockey is like a game of poker. In poker, there will be moments when you lose a hand that you deserve to win.  You may have the better cards, but are forced to fold your hand because of a bet that you cannot match.  There will be moments when you win a hand you do not deserve to win because it is you making large bets with the poor cards.  When you bluff.  It...

Capitals Shut-out Panthers to Reclaim Division Lead

Michelle is a contributing writer with Gold Star Games, your tailgating games company. The Washington Capitals are back on top after goaltender, Tomas Vokoun, wreaked havoc on his former Florida teammates. With a 42-save shut, the Caps reclaimed first place in the Southeast division. A 4-0 win over the Panthers had the Panthers anything but happy to see their former goaltender....

Ward Must Change

Last spring, the NHL watched as Joel Ward, a defense-first power forward, had a bit of a coming-out party in the playoffs. Despite being averaging less than a half of a point a game, Ward led his Nashville Predators with 7 goals and 6 assists while averaging over 20 minutes per game (he only averaged 17 in regular season). With the Capitals having seen their offence dry up in the...

Mike Knuble Benched

For the first time in Mike Knuble’s three-year tenure with the Washington Capitals, he will be a healthy scratch based on his performance. He will be in the press box at the Verizon Center tonight to watch the Capitals take on the Winnipeg Jets. The reason behind his benching is because he hasn’t been a top point producer on the Capitals this season. His last goal came...

Capitals' Mike Knuble a healthy scratch; Mike Green's rehab is on track

Mike Knuble's most-recent goal for the Washington Capitals came Dec. 5 at the Florida Panthers, a drought of 31 games going into Thursday night's matchup with Winnipeg. But Knuble didn't get the chance to end it against the Jets, as he was a healthy scratch for performance reasons for the ...

Frustration keeping Capitals' Nicklas Backstrom away from rink

Jay Beagle knows what Nicklas Backstrom is going through with his concussion. As the Washington Capitals' leading scorer sits out, unable to play or even skate, the fourth-liner who missed 31 games earlier this season can empathize. But he can't help. Concussions are so unique that there's not much Beagle ...

12-second spurt undoes Capitals' surefire win in shootout loss to Jets

The Washington Capitals had two points in the bag. Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin turned on the offense in the third period, and Tomas Vokoun was brilliant. But a two-goal lead late in the third was gone in 12 seconds. A five-on-three goal surrendered, followed by a knuckler that deflected ...

Knuble to be healthy scratch for Capitals-Jets game

Caps' Orlov is taking on look of veteran defenseman

Dmitry Orlov is the face of the Washington Capitals' future on the blue line. That face is a little dented now, as evidenced by a broken nose, but that's just another example of the defenseman's toughness and ability to be unfazed in the NHL. At 20 years old, he hasn't ...

Shootout loss to Jets was missed opportunity for Capitals

A broken-stick penalty, a six-on-three goal and a once-in-a-season kind of deflection. Those are the events that led the Washington Capitals into overtime and then a shootout and eventually a loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night. Bad bounces? Sure. "Unfortunately, there was a blocked shot and then a ...
