Alex Ovechkin and Henrik Lundqvist have never made it to the Eastern Conference Finals. One of them will this spring. But it’s getting awfully hard to tell which one. Ovechkin scored his second goal of the series and Lundqvist allowed three goals for just the fourth time in the postseason as the Washington Capitals squeaked out a 3-2 win Saturday over the New York Rangers to even the series at two wins apiece. The series has been whittled down to a best-of-three, with Game 5 slated for Monday night in New York, Game 6 back in Washington on Wednesday and Game 7, if necessary, at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, May 12. “It’s one of those pivotal games that I think changes the whole look of the series,” Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner said. “If they had gone up 3-1, it would have been extremely tough. It was as close to a must-win as you can get.” The Capitals have gotten this far because of the goaltending of rookie Braden Holtby and the shot-blocking of just about everyo...

Have the Capitals figured out Lundqvist?

The old book on Henrik Lundqvist was always to shoot high glove side. It was Hank’s biggest weakness, and was exploited a few years ago by Sergei Fedorov when the Capitals completed their comeback in the playoffs after being down 3-1 in the series. Fedorov’s goal was high glove side from a decent angle, and was a shot that a lot of people would have liked to see stopped. It seems...

Ovechkin Suspended? Yeah Right

And here's exhibit "A"...To watch on YouTube, click here.#NYR Multiple sources indicate that Ovechkin will not have a hearing on hit. Mike Milbury Considers Alex Ovechkin's Hit on Dan Girardi 'Unacceptable' (Video)

Alex Ovechkin has a habit of ruffling feathers. The Capitals forward has been under a microscope before for delivering questionable hits, so maybe we shouldn't be all that surprised that some are skeptical of his hit on Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi. Among those who find Ovechkin's hit "unacceptable" is Mike Milbury. Milbury has never been one to pull any punches...

Alex Ovechkin's Controversial Hit Adds to Debate Over Head Shots, Safer Equipment, Player Awareness

Another day, another head shot debate. Saturday's NHL playoff action produced another nail-biter between the Rangers and Capitals, with Mike Green's late third-period goal the difference in a 3-2 Washington win to even the series. The game also stirred up more controversy with a questionable hit by Alex Ovechkin on Dan Girardi in the second period. Ovechkin was given a two...

Game 3 a Career Defining Win for Lundqvist

In my Game 3 post game thoughts, I stated that Henrik Lundqvist's performance was one he hadn't been able produce in his career and its looks like Craig Custance at ESPN Insider agrees..."If the Rangers continue winning in these playoffs, it will be one that defines Lundqvist's career. Make 46 saves in a triple-overtime playoff win, including a crucial glove save...

Kovalchuk Leads Devils To A Win

from Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated, Discovery Channel has Shark Week. Apparently this is Russia Week in the NHL. In a week dominated by Alex Ovechkin’s ice time in Washington and Alexander Radulov’s bar time outside Phoenix, there was no more noteworthy performance than by Kovalchuk, who, especially early in the contest, appeared rejuvenated despite his debilitating injury...

Breaking down the goals from ECSF Game Four

1-0 Caps The Capitals dominated the Rangers for the entire first period and to no surprise the score was reflective of that. Washington’s first goal was one that should have been stopped by Henrik Lundqvist. I think it is the first time we have said that in this series. Anyway, the Caps were doing a good job pressuring us in our zone prior to the goal. The puck kicked out along...

Practice: May 6

The Washington Capitals were on ice for a practice Sunday morning following their game four win over the New York Rangers on Saturday afternoon.  Some updates from Arlington: Once more, the story of the day was that there was no story from Kettler Capitals Iceplex.  Dale Hunter's lines remained unchanged: Ovechkin-Laich-Johansson, Chimera-Backstrom-Semin, Hendricks-Beagle...

Key players step up for Capitals in Game 4 win

Throughout the Washington Capitals' postseason, their secondary players have been the ones making the big plays. Secondary scoring is indeed very important, but with the exception of Alex Ovechkin, the Capitals' big players remained mostly silent when it came to scoring. Before Game 4, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin, Brooks Laich, and Marcus Johansson, the team's leading...

Capitals Top Rangers Tie Series 2-2

The Capitals won game four 3-2 to tie their second round series with the Rangers at two games apiece.  The Washington Capitals pulled out the victory today against the New York Rangers, but it was an extremely close game.  The Capitals had the better of the play in the first period and went ahead 1-0 on an Alexander Ovechkin powerplay goal.  The...

A tail of two hits

There were two hits on the ice this weekend that have gotten a bit of scrutiny.  The first one is the hit that Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Rostislav Klesla put on Nashville Predators forward Matt Halischuk. Klesla was given a two minute penalty on the play and has a hearing on Sunday with the National Hockey League's department of player safety. With the inconsistency...

Late Penalty Hurts Blueshirts Again in Game 4 Loss to Capitals

Much like it did in Game 2 at Madison Square Garden, a late penalty taken by the New York Rangers turned into the game-winning goal for the Washington Capitals in a 3-2 win in Game 4 at the Verizon Center. This time, the culprit for the Blueshirts was Carl Hagelin. Hagelin took a two minute slashing penalty and Capitals’ defenseman Mike Green took advantage and ripped a slap shot...

Rapid Rewind: Young Guns. Capitals 3, Rangers 2

Photo by Nick Wass/AP The Washington Capitals got what they needed from their young guns on Saturday afternoon, defeating the New York Rangers 3-2 inside Verizon Center to equal their Eastern Conference semifinal series at two games each.  The Capitals took the lead twice, once in the first period and once in the second period, on goals from Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom...

Fantasy Hockey Playoff ONE (5/6)

This is the really fast fast edition of the Fantasy Hockey Playoff ONE.  Yesterday had only one game on the schedule and honestly it was not a good day for fantasy owners.  Did you have Henrik Lundqvist?  Sadly, he gave up three goals on 26 shots despite all the really spectacular saves.  Did you want Artem Anisimov?  Sure he had two points but was on the ice...
