Jason Chimera, a left-wing for the Washington Capitals, is known by fans as the chirpy, speed skater who is a solid all-around player. On Saturday night, he recorded one assist on the Caps second goal in the first game of the season. Rockthered caught up with Chimera and asked him his thoughts on new coach Adam Oates, the season ahead, and the home opener game tomorrow night. Image from Capitals Club Scarlet. Q: I don't want to talk about the lockout since it's over, but is there one insight that you gained from it? Chimera: That it was not necessary, I think. That's the biggest insight I have. Q: The season started Saturday, but we've only had one game to judge Coach Oates new coaching style. What do you think we can expect to see from him this season? I know you played with him in Edmonton in 2003. Chimera: Yeah, well it's hard to judge after one game, especially with all the powerplays and penalties, but he's an up-tempo guy, and he's an offensive guy, so he's pretty open with communication, so that's good. Q: I remember Oates said he told management that they didn't have to pay him since he's played so bad that season. That's not the punishment he has for you guys, right? Chimera: Yeah, no, I hope not! Q: What do you expect from the season, with the shortened schedule and everything else? Chimera: Well, you gotta get on your way, I think it's important to get a good start. If you wait too long to get going, you'll get behind. There's only 47 games left now, you really gotta get going to get those points up. Q: Are you excited to start on Tuesday in front of everybody at Verizon Center? Chimera: Oh yeah, it'll be fun. Anytime you play in front of Verizon Center it's a cool game. You've got everyone out in red, it's like a red-out, and when we're playing our fans are pretty loud so it's gonna be great.
