UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The New Jersey Devils began their run as one of the NHL's most dominant teams during the last lockout-shortened season. Eighteen years later, the Devils are still playing the same efficient and collective type of hockey that's defined their generation of success. David Clarkson scored the tie-breaking goal with 11:43 left in the third period as the reigning Eastern Conference champion Devils edged the New York Islanders, 2-1, in the season opener for both teams Saturday night. Travis Zajac, who had just two goals in 15 games during an injury-plagued 2011-12, scored the first goal of the game for the Devils, who lost to the Los Angeles Kings in six games in last year's Stanley Cup Finals. The Devils have reached the Finals five times since the 1995 season and have won it all three times, second-most in that span behind only the Detroit Red Wings. The Devils also played impressive defense Saturday in front of goaltender Martin Brodeur, who began hi...

Short or not, Brodeur excited about 19th season

Martin Brodeur is entering his 19th season in the NHL with a little excitement, some expectation and a new teammate who is a blast from the past: ''Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!'' The Devils started the season off with a surprise Friday, placing top draft pick Stefan Matteau, 18, on their 23-man roster for the opener against the New York Islanders Saturday. The rookie...

Devils Start Season in Glorious Fashion

The New Jersey Devils opened the 2013 season with a win against the division-rival New York Islanders. Martin Brodeur played well between the pipes, Travis Zajac and David Clarkson provided the offense, and the Devils jumped out to a quick two points. I was extremely impressed with the pace of the game in the first period. The Devils moved the puck well and had a few good...

By: Mike Luciano @MikeLuci Recently, New Jersey Devils head coach Pete DeBoer made it official that Zach Parise’s successor as captain will be defenseman Bryce Salvador. Some loose ends before a date with the Islanders

Just some news and notes for anyone who is interested before the Devils take on the Islanders tomorrow on the Island. Bryce Salvador has been named the captain of the New Jersey Devils, replacing Zach Parise who has since moved on to play for Minnesota. Seems to be a pretty well-supported pick by the players. “I think it’s a great choice,” said Ilya Kovalchuk to Tom...

Reaching the Stanley Cup finals hasn't made the New Jersey Devils one of the favorites to win the NHL title in this lockout-shortened season. Far from it. Despite returning Ilya Kovalchuk, Martin Brodeur and much of the club that came within two games of winning its fourth Cup, the Devils have a lot of doubters heading into the 48-game regular season, which begins Saturday...
