Some things are inevitable. The Flyers officially named Claude Giroux their captain today, ending weeks of speculation. Giroux will be the 19th player to wear the C for the Flyers. Giroux will take over the role as Captain from Chris Pronger who has not played since November of 2011, and continues to recover from post-concussion syndrome. Since coming into the league, it is hard to dispute Giroux’s growth. He contributed greatly to the Flyers run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2010. Last season he scored 93 points, the most since Eric Lindros scored the same amount in 98-99. But even though Giroux was not officially the team’s captain, he often acted as it anyway. Giroux has been very vocal on and off the ice and has taken a leadership role with the team. He crystallized that role in game 6 against the Pittsburgh Penguins in last year’s playoffs when he begged to be put on the ice for the first shift and then ran over Sidney Crosby and scored goal on the shift. His play set the tone for the Flyers who would go on to eliminate the Pens. Hopefully Giroux will bring some stability to the captain’s C. Pronger was injured early in his tenure and will probably never play again. Mike Richards was never the vocal leader the Flyers needed and wound up getting traded to LA where he helped the Kings win a Cup. There were a series of uneasy Captains prior to that included Eric Desjardins, Derian Hatcher, Peter Forsberg and Jason Smith. The last time the Flyers were in need of a new captain, there were several candidates mentioned. This time only one name was mentioned. That further demonstrates Giroux’s growth. There is no doubt that Giroux is worthy and deserving to be the Flyers captain. Similar Posts: Flyers Odds and Ends – Showdown with Pens, Briere’s wrist, G for Captain?
